Back in the key of Octobird, we return to the pristine dynamics of Bimstein. From the onset, Palm Slap leans in with sluggish tape edit styles, tight electro rhythms, and playful earworms. Evolving into what feels like a moody 5th gen platformer, things take a more metallic heavy-rhythm turn. Controlling the color palette is a clear Octobird skillset. Passing halfway, melodic tension emerges once again from the rhythmic detour making for a very narratively guided trio of closing tracks. From the heavy side-pumping of saturated echoes to the crazy well-crafted perc throughout, PR16 feels like the inevitable polished gem of a closer. There is no lag here, just pure diamond quality.

Findlinge is a colorful psychedelic ride trough textures and rhythms. A dream within a dream within a dream, where you are still able to collect little gems and take them from one world into the other.

Like most of my music these tunes are very much based on different sampling techniques. Digging my vinyl collection for sounds between sounds and carving out hidden memories in dusty record grooves to reconnect them into emotional context.

Zanderhythm MIX #11 - OCTOBIRD

I’ve always maintained a very moody relationship with dub influenced music. I deeply admire all the ingredients: The circulating, stumbling drum patterns, the all-consuming tape echos and of course….bass! But the final implementation always carries the risk of ending up in cultural or musical cliches. With Dub Techno there often seems to be a far to narrow defined set of tools of echos and comb filters mixed with minimal techno put together somewhere in the late 90s. That’s why I felt much more successful discovering influences of dub in all kinds of musical directions.

The following collection of tracks is a rather weird one. I would totally agree with someone arguing that this isn’t really dub music. It’s not. But it carries a lot of the mindset of dub music as a ritual, hypnotizing art form. Less researched, more recovered from different corners of my music collection.

Octobird Salad #14 | Dub Abstraxions

Well…let’s have some pre new years breaks, shall we?! I actually recorded the set for this episode of Octobird Salad a few weeks back while preparing for a gig I just played for the wonderful people from Eddy Breaks. They’re running a regular party series with some good old Drum’n’Bass vibes, ranging from the classic uptempo thing to Jungle styles and Dub stuff. This was quite a nice challenge, as I haven’t been playing these kind of tunes for quite some times but rather been swaying underneath 140bpm. But with the ongoing release trend of mixing house tunes with breaks I already had some tunes on my harddisk waiting to be played.

Organelle drives in and out of a polar spectrum: the shadowed, looping post-industrial grit of Treevolt and the more luminous, organic left field of Woodrough. The area between these aesthetic pillars makes each juncture that much more unique. The ebbs and flows somehow follow a natural trajectory despite being far from predictable making for 34 dense minutes that never overstay their welcome. The staple dissonant riffs, busy perc, and tasteful bridges all remain intact, but in evolution from Octobird’s last, Baikonur, Organelle seems to retain and build with a more concretely directed pace driving each listen through a more diverse myriad of textures and seemingly very real places yet all with an oddly particular fidelity that suggests some weird sense of omnipotent control.

Inspired by the recording workflow from the sessions with his like minded fella Vodor L. Zeck, Octobird got himsal an 8-track digital recorder and startet jamming.
Similar to the recordings from the recent Tram Komputer Release, these jams reveal themselves more or less as a raw distillate from spontaneous sessions, driven by repetitive patterns, exuberant modulations and a midi clock. Recorded in a single run and shrunk down to a bearable size later on.

Like Dessert Sessions… but on Midi Clock.

With a progressive blend of uncanny melodies and warping harmonics, the Baikonur EP feels almost like a computer data process that somehow got itself locked into techno rhythms. The organic timbre even lies oddly between raw synthesis and heavily processed acoustics. These binaries ultimately balance but provide a mysticism that uniquely destabilizes the listen. Particularly Baikonur and The Gate exemplify this eccentric mix of evolving musicality and an odd sense that it’s all just data being filtered through melodious substructures.

Octobird is a Pro-Jockey, Discjuicer and Music Lover born and based in Berlin, Germany. Someone who’s not necessarily looking for yet unknown sounds in electronic music rather than putting already archived sounds of a long-forgotten future into a new context. Trying to blur your brain’s reception of connotation and curiosity.

Working with sound fragments from old vinyl recordings and films is certainly not a completely new approach, but Octobird archieved to develop his own language from this heritage of Hip Hop and House Music. Strongly modulated microsamples, a handful of drum computers and hardware synths, and jams as raw as possible glue his musical output together.
