The Svalbard Satellite ground station has worked with a range of Earth observation missions in polar orbits. The station is equipped to survive for a week or two without a fresh supply of water or waste removal.

Rabies is an important zoonotic disease with high fatality rates in animals and humans. In Svalbard, the Arctic fox is regarded as the principal reservoir, but there is considerable debate about how the disease persists at the low population densities that are typical for this species.

SVALBARD UTOPI / ONE DISTURBED ARCTIC FOX

Aleksandr "Sasha" Romanovsky has worked as a tour guide at the Russian abandoned settlement of Pyramiden since 2012 when he was the only person to apply for the job. A loner by nature, Romanovsky has come to feel at home in this unusual, otherworldly place surrounded by polar bears.

SVALBARD UTOPI / LONE PYRAMIDEN CARETAKER

Deep in the bowels of an icy mountain on Svalbard lies a resource of vital importance for the future of human­kind. Millions of these tiny brown specks, from more than 930,000 varieties of food crops, are stored in the Global Seed Vault, a reserve of seeds for use in case of an apocalyptic event or a global catastrophe.

SVALBARD UTOPI / DOOMSDAY SEED VAULT

Svalbard, among the fastest-warming regions on Earth, is home to some of the northernmost glaciers, which bury most of the archipelago’s surface under no less than 200 meters of thick ice. Taken together, Svalbard glaciers represent 6 percent of the worldwide glacier area. Their meltdown would raise the global sea level by 1.7 centimeters.

SVALBARD UTOPI / NORTHERNMOST GLACIER 1980

Isfjord Radio is a coast radio station, weather station, and hotel located at Kapp Linné on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard. Established in 1933, Isfjord Radio was automated and depopulated in 1999. Parts of the outdated installations have been preserved as a historical site.

The Northern Lights are a physical phenomenon that occurs when the solar winds are stronger than normal. During the darkest time of the year in Svalbard in December and January, it’s possible to see the Northern Lights around the clock. Even in the middle of the day.

The desks and chairs in the administration office in Pyramiden, Svalbard, are still laid out as they would have been in the 90s. Papers are strewn around the office adding to the feeling of eerie desolation. It was in this building that the KGB office existed.

Kayaking trips are a great way to have a close-up experience with the Arctic nature. You can choose between everything from shorter trips in the Longyearbyen area to multi-day trips including overnight accommodation. Many are tempted by the chance to glide silently through the water and enjoy the magnificent nature.

SVALBARD UTOPI / A CHANCE TO GLIDE SILENTLY

There are more than 160 species of vascular plants in Svalbard archipelago, of which for example some saxifrages species are quite common, growing in even the poorest tundras. By far the most widespread flowering plant in Spitsbergen, Saxifraga oppositifolia defies with the brilliance of its colors the fact that the North Pole is only 1000 kilometers away.

SVALBARD UTOPI / CRYSTAL CLEAR

NoCGV Svalbard W303 is a Norwegian Coast Guard icebreaker and offshore patrol vessel. She is NBC-protected with constant overpressure and is capable of icebreaking and emergency towing up to 100,000 tons. Her primary operating area is in the Arctic waters north of Norway, the Barents Sea, and around the Svalbard islands.

Siv Limstrand acts also as a psychologist to help people through existential crises, which the climate of uncertainty currently hanging over the future of the archipelago of Svalbard contributes to making deeper. People decide to settle in this distant moor to escape their inner monsters, forgetting that the most uncomfortable truths rise to the surface more powerfully than ever before in front of these endless expanses of ice.

SVALBARD UTOPI / PRIEST WITH RIFFLE

Whether or not the Norsemen discovered the barren Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in the Viking Age remains a rather debated matter nowadays. Theoretically, given their in-depth knowledge, the Norsemen were able to reach the frozen land. According to some Old Norse annals from Iceland, Svalbard was supposedly discovered after a 4-day voyage east of Iceland in 1194. However, it is quite improbable that they founded a temporary (let alone permanent) settlement somewhere in the archipelago in the process, primarily given the lack of archaeological resources.

SVALBARD UTOPI / KRIGSTROMME

One of the most tenacious birds in Svalbard, Arctic Terns are very territorial and will attack anything or anyone that gets too close. Known as the ‘sea swallow’, they’re easily identified by their black cap on their otherwise white bodies. They travel hundreds of thousands of miles each year.
