Once known to jangle, Sydney band Narrow Lands have turned their hands to rumbling. Since adding a baritone guitar to their mix, their music has become heavier, darker, weirder and, well, simply better. On their self-titled LP, the guys from Narrow Lands mix the sweet grittiness of punk with a thundering mess of noise/feedback, in the spirit of bands like Swans or Dead China Doll. Recorded in two days in mid-winter, in a shed behind Alan’s parents’ place on a little farm west of Bathurst, Narrow Lands aimed to keep the LP sounding as fresh, authentic and ferocious as possible. Each ridiculous sound you might hear here is an experiment with the potential of an instrument, a way of allowing things to 'freak out' without forcing the issue. The result hits you like a friendly punch in the guts.

Hungover & High is the first EP for Broadcasting Transmitter released collaboratively through Octopus Pi Records and Time /\ Space (Edwin Sheather's of the bands new label - which will release the EP on limited tape).

The track 'Mandelbrot's Hangover' was featured on the Octopus Pi compilation Whatispsych. Here we offer the full Broadcasting Transmitter session, recorded as two one-take pieces at Megaphon Studios on the 2nd of September 2012.

This music is entirely improvised, without overdubs and while all three members were incredibly hungover & high.

In the band's own words: "Broadcasting Transmitter are about as unprepared and unorganised as a band can be. That's because there is something truly beautiful and honest about imperfection. There's an underlying sense of humour in the absurdity of searching for meaning and purpose within something that is utterly chaotic. 

Each piece takes us by surprise and I think that's why we find it so exhilarating, because we are literally getting lost in music. Our feelings are moulded by the environment around us and a piece is determined by our collective state of mind at the time. 

We're enamoured with the universe and the ways you can connect to it by transmitting and feeding off different frequencies and vibrations. That's why we're inspired to make this sort of music - we're attempting to tune into that universal consciousness, albeit in the most primal way possible."

WHATISPSYCH is the first album and compilation to be released on Octopus Pi records. 

Featuring some of the most unique underground bands in Sydney in 2012: Broadcasting Transmitter, Dead China Doll, Dead Radio, East River, God K, Lyyar, Making, Nhomea, No Art, Psychlops Eyepatch & Roboter Haus. 

The artists were asked to write and record a track which reflected their ability to affect an audience. 

This is a double-vinyl LP with screen-printed cover art and colour records - clear on hot pink & white on black. The limited edition deluxe album included a hand-made, dyed and screen-printed fabric cover with a numbered zine.

Recorded analogue in September & October 2012 as the final project at Megaphon Studios Sydney; compiled and produced by Kimberley Galceran of Octopus Pi. 

WHATISPSYCH has been sold to collectors in the UK, Germany, Greece, Italy and Sweden, as well as all over Australia.

Saturnalia was the name of a pagan celebration held in December in ancient Rome, honouring the god Saturn. Likewise, this EP was conceived during a December camping trip on the north coast of NSW; a group of under-20 year old friends with tents at the beach consuming fruit and psychedelics amongst goannas and dingoes. 

The second phase of ‘Saturnalia’ began in January 2013. A studio, ‘Shabby Road’, was created in core member Josch Dinjar’s living room, and quickly recording began, punctuated by nude swims and coffees. In DIY spirit, it incorporated MP3 players, strange stereo systems found in sheds, old tape decks, mysteriously customised effect pedals, and mixing techniques that the band virtually ‘made up’. It all makes for one layered, luscious, nostalgic listen.

‘Paranoise’ is a bright, twisted, dynamic mini-album, spawned by Sydney band, Psychlops Eyepatch. It was written by Nick Fahey and Matt Mills, the band's guitarists, and then spun out together with long-time mates and co-collaborators Jimmy White (bass), Johnny Hopwood (vocals) and Sam Wilson (drums) in spring last year; mixed in January 2013. 

As with the compilation WHATISPSYCH, it was one of the last projects to be realised at the iconic Megaphon Studios, made on tapes and analogue desks, with the help of producer (and uncle of Nick) Shane Fahey (Scattered Order, Makers of the Dead Travel Fast). 

While carrying traces, licks and loves of bands of the past, ‘Paranoise’ sees Psychlops Eyepatch carve out their own particular sound: sparse but sinuous, steady but transporting psychedelic/garage rock. These guys surely know how to mix textures, styles and tones to create something wild. From their unsettling, icy ‘Munchausen by Proxy’ to the provocative, swaggering ‘Nuclear Bombora’,  

Psychlops Eyepatch will make your room spin and your toes curl, while patterns of light shift, spray and melt across your ceiling. Or blast ‘Paranoise’ at your next house party and watch the bodies burst into tarantism.

Octopus Pi is a music company spanning a variety of projects, primarily unique events in independent spaces which emphasise the experience of the audience.

O/π aims to support unsigned and independent artists, nurture the local underground music scene and provide opportunities to touring artists.

In this incarnation O/π is a record label, assisting local independent artists in releasing their material.

Octopus Pi is Kimberley Galceran with support from a bunch of like-minded, passionate, do-ers.

The emphasis is on fringe music that connects with the listener.
