Prepping bits "before hand" definitely helps, and using templates. 

This a probably what I call a "Stage 2" track - i.e. big bits of it were made previously. Cut from 11 minutes to (just under) 10 minutes, so I can have a go at the Soundcloud Mastering service.

UPDATE 1: annoying click removed! Sub bass sections created/added, delay added to keys/voices. Levels mixed, more compressions added. UPDATE 4: Decided I didn't like the Soundcloud Master version - too much clipping, plus I killed the bass. So I mastered my own version - took the original export, loaded it into Mixbus then piped it to 3 different buses - each one handling a separate part of the spectrum - bass, mid, top - then played around with the compressors + whatnot until it sounded more like what I wanted [Nov 15th 2022]

Saturday 30th September 2023: this is another backing track/beat. It repeatedly switches from 6/4 team to 4/4 time (3 bars of the the first, then 4 bars of the second, so it loops in blocks of 7 bars. Maths.)
I have a melody + b-lines already lined up. This beat is to help me write/record/build the track.
The beats were created in Renoise, then recorded into Harrison Mixbus for extra processing/FX etc.

Saturday 30th September 2023: recorded this a few weeks ago, and completely forgot about it. Mixed it down with the drums as quiet as possible. 
Another track featuring a DrumGizmo beat, with a Korg Minilogue arpeggio/melodies, kind of a remix/re-do of earlier/recent tracks. Just a jam, but I really love some of the sounds that come out of that Korg machine - very very sweet, emotive, sweet distortion.

Basso Harmono

Bit of a noisy one. Sampling The Amber Spyglass mp3 audiobook ["..I Balthamos, listener of lives, recording angel.. - https://hisdarkmaterials.fandom.com/wiki/Balthamos], in about 2003. Breakbeats created on the old Amiga 1200, but the track was pieced together in Acid Pro DAW on Windows. This bassline "blew up" a soundsystem once... Well, the electricity got cut off somehow; I was DJing my own tunes, as a support to some local bands. Halfway through, the sound goes dead... I'm thinking I'd broken the whole gig, and the main band would be very upset with me. But the sound engineer got the electric supply stored pretty quick [sorry, Owen!].
The version here is a bit of a remix of the original - added some filter sweeps on the Master mix, using Linux Audio software many years later. There is also one sample from the vocals of a band I had with mates [the band were called The Madusa Komplex, we only got as far as MySpace..!]

Other samples here are a little bit of "O Superman" by Laurie Anderson; it's a bit buried in the mix. There is also a little bit of guitar by the band Low - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_(band) - can't remember which track I sampled now though!

Morphing... let's begin.. This is another track that is extremely unfinished! Featuring a sample of Morph, the classic claymation character. He was on BBC Radio 4 so I lifted a sample off there.

OK. More mad beats - lots and lots of programming of da beats - so much so that I forgot to add a bassline!! Silly me. 
The sample of the guitar riff by Entombed ("Left Hand Path") has to suffice as a b-line. The spoken sample is from the film of "Catch 22" - I think it's the bit where Doc Daneeka is explaining the concept of Catch 22 to him [edit: it's not] . Anyway, this tune I actually put onto dubplate  - back in about 2000 - at Loud Mastering in Taunton, Somerset - cost me 50 squid too (for an A and a B side though). The beats - I was trying to emulate Jonny L Piper (Grooverider Remix)-style break-fills and stuff that Ambisonics had played me of his own stuff. And I was using a break pattern that I had heard on a d'n'b track - where you take the first kick of the break out every other time the break starts -  listen and see what I mean..

Catcher 22

"Reporting back from the front-line - three times is enough. But this isn't the end. Nor will it wait."

-This started out as an attempt to do a total Dr. Who theme tune remix - gave up on that and was just left with the "Exterminate!" sample and a triplet pulse buried deep in the mix - this is a bit of a dodgy production because the bass drum itself contains a bass note that kind of clashes with the actual b-lines. Makes for a muddy mix in some ways. Who cares anyway?!!! (I do.)

The track does seem to have a condensed, tight sound in other ways. And it's funny.. it's funny that I never finished this sentence in a proper ..

Exterminate!

"..has chlorine gas been militarized?"

This is one that needs a LOT of work doing to it. It was something I made after not making anything for a long time. I added a new section to it every day over one week, so it ended up having lots of different sections. But I am planning to remix the levels etc using the stems. Some time!

The samples are from a sickening TV interview with Assad [Syria President] from when the Syria civil war was in the news a lot - the way he dismissed the idea that they had anything to do with chemical weapons was instantly stomach churning.

The photograph is looking at Pen-Y-Fan from the canal in Brecon, South Wales, UK. I was trying to get a "pre-history" feel for it with a bit of cropping etc.

To be honest, I'd given up on Soundcloud for a long while, but I've returned to it in 2022 and it seems to be much improved. Also, maybe I never quite appreciated it in the first place.
