It’s such a pleasure to introduce the 1st Portuguese artist to the series, and what better way to celebrate than a mixtape by BirdZzie. You see, a producer and dj who has been reached by labels like Voodoohop, Tropical Twista and Casa Caos must have good stories to tell.

His tale for ecos del mundo lets us visit ethereal places and states of mind, shifting our mood for the better. The quality of a mix being eclectic is something we always look forward to.

For two millennia, the Olmec civilization lay forgotten beneath the jungles of Veracruz and the ruins of subsequent Mesoamerican cities. 

One early theme that was identified, was the half-man half-jaguar form known as the “Were-Jaguar”. The “Were-Jaguar” is most easily identified by its human-like form combined with a down-turned mouth, an elongated feline snout and a cleft head, which features an “X” shaped cross in its right eye, which is a common glyph in Olmec art. 

The meaning of the “X” is not entirely clear, as it is used in many different contexts and research hasn’t settled on a single meaning. Here it would seem most obvious that it symbolizes blindness or death of the eye. 

However, it could mean the complete opposite, for the “X” is often seen on the attire of the Were-Jaguar and other deities, where it is believed to symbolize the underworld2. With the jaguar having been revered for its nocturnal prowess, it may be that the “X” signifies the ability to see in the darkness of the underworld.

This set was recorded in my hometown Panzano in Chianti (Tuscany, Italy) in July 2019 for the Brazilian label Casa Chaos. A safe space where to rest in the middle of a busy summer… it is a mosaic of sensual, soothing, nurturing soundscapes, where to find refuge in the middle of the craziness of life, to re-tune to one’s own source of peace and power. It starts slow and builds up gently, touching both the darker and the brighter frequencies, to integrate the opposites and from there be ready to face again the great paradox of life...

Currently residing as DJ and Music Consultant and Supervisor at La Granja IBIZA, he rarely repeats and never ceases to amaze.
