Portugal-based DJ duo Ohxalá take elements of Brazilian and African folk from bygone eras and blend them with computerized beats to create temporally eclectic soundscapes that speak to a multitude of genres. Recorded in summer 2020 on the Scorpios Sunset Beach.

Something Feels Different

Very happy to share this set with you. This live selection was performed at the Beyond The Veil party in New York. At around 110 bpm the groove aims to create a vibe where people can dance, but also connect and enjoy the music.

The mix includes beautiful words sampled from Beatriz Nascimiento and Jorge Luis Borges, and acts from Brasil, South Africa, US, Lebanon, Morroco, and more!

On Christmas night a group of friends gathered for a warm candlelit dinner. Each guest brought some food, a small gift, and their coziest sweater. 

Many months prior to this night I had a dream. It was a dream of an abstract musical set, something I had never tried before. For many months I collected tracks that I felt would fit this dream set, hoping one day I would find myself in a moment ripe for it.

Dinner took on a special form. Guests shared intimate stories and exchanged their gifts lovingly. After dessert they found themselves lounging in a room of rugs and furry blankets and cushions. There were decks on the floor and there were speakers on the floor too.

It was a perfect moment for the dream set. I started to play as the guests lounged on the floor. We drowned in the music for four hours and before we knew it, sunrise was around the corner. We had reached magic together. 

This set is a recording of that wonderful night. It may surprise you as is full of tracks with no beat. I hope you are able to find the magic in it, as those of us did on that special night.

Great crowd, lovely warm vibes, banging sound, amazing scene. @yemanjo is a project of the DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ben Harris. Based in and inspired by his adopted Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, his original songs are an amalgamation of South American sounds, Afro-Latin rhythms, and electronic beats. He describes himself as a "Rainforest Soul" whose music reflects his deep respect for and knowledge of folkloric traditions from across the globe.
