Reclaim Your City 188 | Mirella Kroes (Amsterdam)

Mirella Kroes is a strong mind with a love for nature, both spiritual and down to earth. This duality is reflected in her dj-sets. She favours the contemporary, deeper side of techno that is in equal parts enticing to the brain and captivating the soul. Mirella tends to explore the trippier, mental side of electronic music in her sets that echo a longing for the mysterious. Space is key in her meticulously crafted organic builds that allow for time to appreciate the space between sounds and the crispy little details that keep it fresh. If you want to experience her musical vision take a plunge and submerge yourself in warm space and deep sounds at Motiv, the clubnight she runs in Amsterdam.

Hailing from the north of Holland, Mirella started buying records with her older brother who taught her how to mix at the age of 19. Tough loop oriented techno was the soundtrack to the local rave scene at the turn of centuries that fostered her career. Nowadays she prefers a combination of hypnotic and transcendental music with the occasional old school dance floor driver in between. She has over ten years experience and is a regular in Dutch and European clubs. Over the years she played in Doornroosje, Trouw, Studio 80, and at festivals such as Awakenings. She held a residency in the now closed Cruquiusgilde, a former warehouse in Amsterdam known for its raw and intimate setting.

As the Romanian DJ closed out the room while Ricardo Villalobos was warming up in Room One, it was one of those nights where time had become transient. His set was strikingly strong and held such a firm vibe in the room we asked him to give us an impromptu extended performance – ending long after the room was due to close. With this night still firmly etched in our memories even a year later, we got in touch with Cosmin to unlock his set for everyone to hear. 

Speaking to us via email, Cosmin told us: 

“Room Two in fabric is one of my favourite places to play. The energy and the sound are always at peak levels, and the team is the loveliest around. That night I was on closing duties, and as I thought things were going to wind down, the place just filled up again and I was asked to keep playing. I loved every second of it as none of it was planned, and just locked into the crowd and kept going with the vibe. Hope this recording gives you a glimpse into that special morning.”

Cosmin TRG returns to Room Two to headline a bill of leftfield techno in Room Two this Friday for our first fabric Presents, joined by Oliver Ho showcasing his Broken English Club project and Samuel Kerridge’s industrialised live set.

ODD EVEN PRESENTS 008 - Steve Parker

It's podcast time again, friends. This time we bring you something a little different to complement the On the 5th Day podcast palette, contributing its own warm, vibrant colours to the stream in a way that can only attributable to one very special artist. Alan Backdrop (aka Alessio Meneghello),

Spearheading the way in musical journeys with a deep and atmospheric feel, here is a perfect example of the evocative stories Backdrop is known for. It is also, for us at least, a spirited celebration of a musically rich summer and an increasing number of intimate techno, experimental and ambient festivals around the world uniting music and nature in the most perfect of ways (Parallel, Tundu Open Air, Harmony Open Air, Modem et al), most of which he has performed at himself. No surprise there.

Like so much music we're finding ourselves drawn to these days, his is a sound which feels like it's in tune with the vibrations of the universe, the deep, richly textured grooves, mellow underlying baselines and glistening percussions pulsating with life's energy and the magic of connectivity. With releases on the likes of Semantica, Hypnus Records, Mental Modern and Prologue, to name but a few, Backdrop is a dedicated studio dweller, forming strong bonds with multiple synthesisers over the years in order to develop the Alan Backdrop sound his loyal followers have grown to love.

With a London appearance coming up at Pickle Factory on September 22nd when he joins On the 5th Day regular Anthony Linell, immerse yourself here to simply reconnect, or to get a feel for what's in store.

Nørbak is Artur, born is the late nineties, in the North of Portugal. His devotion into making music begins early in his life, and since then, keeps working in his studio, day after day, discovering and developing his own sound, diving into ambient and experimental techno. In 2016 releases in labels such as ‘Illegal Alien Records’ and ‘Circular Limited’, reaching the point in 2017 where he sees his  recognition going further with a split vinyl EP on ‘Affin’ and later on contributed to the label’s 10th year anniversary release with the track “Gilgamesh”, in 2018 in he releases the EP “Marah” on Dynamic Reflection, “Nura” on Faut Section and contributed to the yearly Unknown Landscapes compilation on PoleGroup. Feeling supported by some of the most respected artists in the scene, his future can only be brighter than what it is right now, with so many boundaries to achieve, discover, learn and cross.
