Echelon from Portal Theory is a dense record of menacing tones and spooky, sugary voices challenging even the most hardened miserable git not to be stirred. Echelon is the sound of tragic, desperate beauty. It's rhythms rattle and pound with menacing precision. It's chords murmur gently in an oppressive gloom. It's aching, sublime voices that are as sweet as they are claustrophobic. This is music for biting nails, burning candles, and touching skin. These are songs for your dark side.

07 Environ

The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation recorded a goldmine of local music in the 1960s and 70s, but the tapes were neglected and close to ruined when broadcaster Waliko Makhala raised the alarm. With help from the Norwegian Embassy and Norwegian broadcaster Sigbjorn Nedland, digitization got underway. In this program, we sample the results guided by Waliko, Sigbjorn and Martin White, curator of AfricanPoems, a website dedicated to preserving poetry from around the continent.
