If you’re flipping a classic rap sample for a new track, you damn well better do it justice. Well, that’s exactly what we’re getting here on “Panoramic,” the menacing new single from NY duo Dirt Disciples that’ll inspire thoughts about a certain Hip-Hop chef. You have to hand it to one half of this gritty rap tag team, DJ Concept. The Long Island rep provides the listener with a taste of nostalgia while injecting a brooding sensibility via a snarling bassline.

His rhyming collaborator is no slouch either, as Elmira, NY’s Rome Clientel bodies his competition with dead-eyed, no-bullshit bars. And you have to love this callback to pro wrestling’s glory days: “The Tito Santana of rap/ Hop the top turnbuckle, wave my arms, drop kick to the back/ Motherf*ckers.” The New York connection only grows stronger with a guest verse from Coney Island native, Torae. He closes out the track in high fashion, gritting his teeth and spitting bars reminiscent of Jay Z classic, “So Ghetto.”

Dirt Disciples’ The Ambition EP impacts October 9th via Soulspazm. In addition to Torae, the project boasts collaborators such as actor/gifted rapper Rick Gonzalez (Coach Carter) and Sacramento indie rap prince, Chuuwee.

The entire album is produced by Kic Beats of whom Ace said "he doesn’t use many samples. He mostly uses live instrumentation and manipulates it so it has that warm/fat sample feel". Like previous Masta Ace releases, "The Falling Season" is a conceptual work that follows him through his high school years. Known Unknowns is billy woods’ new album, a follow-up to 2013’s Blockhead collaboration Dour Candy. Blockhead is still behind the boards here but there are also a couple beats from his longtime collaborator Aesop Rock. But the center of the whirlwind is still woods, who re-emerges from a two-year hiatus after releasing the avant-garde Today, I Wrote Nothing in early 2015. Known Unknowns finds the artist on more melodic ground, but still his esoteric, acerbic self, spinning verses equal parts joy and terror, wry wit and blind rage. There are guest appearances from ELUCID (Armand Hammer), as well as Aesop Rock, Homeboy Sandman, Googie, singer Barrie McLain and DJ Mo Niklz. Since Dour Candy, Blockhead has worked with Aesop, Sandman and MarQ Spekt but Known Unknowns shows that he and woods have developed their own unique chemistry.

The title came from a feeling that most of the time we’re content not to look or listen beneath the surface for the truths which lie beneath.
