An old interview with a master of vibraphone . A short part of this interview was broadcasted originally by the Second Channel of ERT in 1983


Digging The Archive !
The one who introduced me to Gary Burton’s artistry was actually Stan Getz himself. 
It was begin of July 1981 while visiting Paris after the same year’s Roskilde Festival - which by the way was then the 10th year Jubilee.
The place in Paris ? An newly open at the time Jazz Club in Chateau D’ Eau, which today is famous all over the world .
New Morning ! Stan appeared with his amazing young team. His Quartet. He started his show up on the scene but then… he was coming down from the side staircase visting the bar - to the right of the stage - standing up with his sax and drinking his fav scotch whisky (If I remember well it was White Label !) while the band played ! He was listening to the solos of his band with the spectators - I never seen or experienced anything like it ! 
Amazing gig ! Although he was coughing all night long. After the show, we had a small talk. 
-Real good to see young guys like you, he said.
- This is the 2nd time, I replied 
-Where was the first time, he asked me.
- Montmartre ! I replied 
-Montmarte !!! He said looking very surprised … I never played there, man ! 
-Montmarte was I said…. but not in Paris ….In Copenhagen The Jazzhus I am living in Lund I said.
(He laughed really loud ) 
-That was really funny ….Ohhh now… I understand … (his wife at the time was actually from South Sweden and he used to visit the town sporadically while living in Denmark)
- So which door you opened and came into Jazz I am curious to hear from you ?
- Well… for me it was Bossa Nova … I love your stuff with Tom Jobim, I said. 
- Ohh that explains a lot ….OK !

Crisis ! I must admit that I didn’t had a clue which Gary he meant.
Gary ? who ’s Gary ? 
The band left the club with him… Enigma ! 
Somebody in the bar explained to me half an hour later 
- Gary Burton must be !
- Gary Burton ! 
But that is an ECM bird, I thought ! 
Well …2 years later I had the chance to meet Gary. I met him in Athens in 1983. We had a small discussion but I felt so embarrassed to say, who introduced me to him… 
I regret that today. 
And now, 35 years after, I found the interview in an old cassette tape while …Digging The Archive or as the guru Lennart Wretlind recommends:
