For Orchestra and Electronics

Electric is a (very) miniature rhapsody for orchestra and electronics - a sonic
exploration which captures a synaesthetic perception of the current that
powers our world. The piece features digitally-manipulated field recordings
of a bathroom extractor fan (with a G natural fundamental), plugs, light
switches, screwdrivers and water; I am fascinated by the concept of creating
music with “found objects” (something I was introduced to through Jesse
Stewart’s work) and wanted to incorporate everyday electrical sounds in
order to enhance the visceral nature of the work. The music highlights the
many properties of electricity: it flows (often in opposing directions), sparks,
surges and explodes with power.
I found my inspiration for this piece from a variety of 20th- and 21st-Century
composers, including Michael Torke (Color Music), Hollie Harding (Mixed
Messages, As Echoes), Gustav Mahler and Carl Nielsen. I also thought of film
music (even the music which accompanies the THX logo!) and the cinematic
nature of combining orchestral with digital sounds to create a surreal
experience for the listener.
The audio was created/edited/mixed using Sibelius 7 sounds and Logic Pro
for iPad. The graphic score combines the orchestral Sibelius score and abstract illustrations outlining the use of electronics.

ELECTRIC

This recording was created during a sound recording module during my 3rd year of university. To record this track I used a 414 microphone to record a euphonium duet, called softly as I leave you. Both parts being played by myself.

Freedom

Very loosely inspired by an example in the excellent "Patch & Tweak" book, this is an exceedingly West Coast little fantasy. More modulation sources than you can shake a stick at, lots of generative and self-composing stuff, with yours truly just riding the levels.
