Summer is coming and it’s time to share our lives with all kinds of insects. This is the soundtrack of one of our favorites, the beautiful wasp.

Wasp is also the name of one of Hd Substance’s studio weapons, the Wasp deLuxe Synthesizer, a super basic tool with a specially crafted filter and crappy oscillators. This EP is an homage to the wasp as an insect and as an instrument.

The concept is to use the same synth to create all the non drum parts, creating a main sequence and then resampling and mangling it in every possible way using traditional sampler techniques without the aid of a computer.

All pieces were sequenced on analog step sequencers, all drums were made with old analog and hybrid drum machines and old samplers, all the arrangement was done on a digital sequencer and then recorded from the analog mixer into DAT. No screens involved in the creative process.

Five cuts are the result of this challenge and each one is named after a particular type of wasp, all of them are aimed at the layering dj’s and the educated dancefloors out there. Use them at your discretion.

Following 5 years in Berlin, two albums and a continuing residency at Tresor all bringing acclaim, Maedon is now an established voice and one also in transition.

The 8th release for her own Rant & Rave label announces this in its title, 2.0, and its sound, a bold move away from her industrial roots towards the groove-laden techno that earned her bones im Keller. 
The product of careful study of techno’s roots and evolution, this gradual process reaps rewards here, showcasing a bracing new direction for an already-accomplished artist.

‘Working Out the Kinks’ leads off, more a kinky workout than the work-in- progress its title suggests. 
A vocal sample and rugged groove initially brings an old school feel, something quickly offset by strikingly modern production details. 
The EPs middle stride, ‘Temporal’ and ‘Growing Pains’, attacks heads-down techno head on with style to spare. 
On the former, growling lows and rotating pads are gradually joined by a symphony of sonic detritus, with razor sharp drums slicing through the murk. 
A bouncing bassline and blink-and-miss fills on the latter ham- mer the rhythm onwards, surrounded by reduced industrial elements and grimy ambiance. 
‘Breakthrough’ does exactly that, it’s uneasily modulating lead and bruising EBM bass buffeted by waves of percussion then jackhammering to a climax confirming Maedon’s 2nd coming.

Toma Hawk & Mon.Ton – Nameless & Done

Toma Hawk has once again merged his sound with his moniker Mon.Ton to deliver ‘Nameless & Done’, a juicy Techno EP that you can sink your teeth into. ‘Nameless’ is the first track on the ep with an upped tempo and relentless driving force that pushing the beat forward. Dancing in the background is intricately placed percussive grooves that will certainly get you moving. A bongo-type sound is also weaved in amongst the busyness of the tune before synths take over, adding a gorgeous warmth to the music and elevating ‘Nameless’ to a state of old-school euphoria. Toma Hawk also switches things up in the breakdown as an echoey vintage film monologue consumes the music before once again returning to that infectious techno beat. 

The second tune on the EP is ‘Done’ which gets straight to business with a heavy, galloping beat that sends shudders down your spine and right to your soul. Signature to the Mon.Ton sound, ‘Done’ is dark and intense and features a high-pitched melody that contrasts stunningly over the top of the bass and hits on every level. The music cuts out every so often so that the beat hits with even more force. Eerie vocal snippets once again consume the track before entirely stripping back the track and rebuilding it up bit by bit until a stomping bassline takes over. ‘Done’ is the perfect club hit.
