Just 20 years old and already playing big stages like Thuishaven. Not to forget his powerful releases, which are being playing by National and International DJs. With support from artist like VIL, Daria Kolosovia & Grace Dahl, Genex is one to keep an eye on.

Biography 

Genex is the newest product of today’s Techno scene, defined by fast paced grooves that keep you moving and synths that stab your soul. This guy will do some serious damage to the dancefloor.

From the moment Jim van de Ruit (’02) got in touch with playing the guitar at the age of 11, he knew he wanted to become a musician. Since then, he kept on making music and switched to electronic music when he was 15. But after visiting his first real rave, he knew he wanted to make some techno like the professionals. Currently he is stacking up a lot of tracks. If you’re planning to visit a rave anytime soon, you’ll be blown away by the energy Genex brings on stage.

For this Set the Mood, I've invited Krissy to craft a techno opening set. Known for her deep, straightforward sound, Krissy has seamlessly incorporated this into her set. There's no fuss—just smooth transitions and tracks that effortlessly blend into one another.

From an early age, growing up in a musical family, Krissy was surrounded by melodies and rhythms, with the stage becoming a familiar place. With a microphone in her hand, she often found herself performing, a passion that only deepened as she matured. Over time, Krissy transitioned from singing for various DJ sets to taking her place behind the turntables. Her fascination with the underground techno scene has been a constant source of inspiration, and through her love for techno, she seeks to bring people together, immersing them in the profound experiences that this music offers her.

Krissy’s style can be best described as a fusion of hypnotic and groovy techno, with a distinctive funky hardgroove twist. There’s a unique magic in crafting a sound that is both mesmerizing and rhythmically intense, and this is the essence she strives to convey in every performance.

When she takes on an opening set, Krissy values the importance of starting slowly, carefully building the energy as the set progresses. Her goal is to take the audience on a journey, crafting a narrative through the music, where each track plays a vital role in the story she’s telling.

If given the opportunity to open for any artist, she would choose Uberkikz without hesitation. Uberkikz's hypnotic and groovy sets, rich in creativity and variation, have been a significant source of inspiration for Krissy.

Her musical roots are deeply anchored in jazz, soul, house, and hip-hop; the genres that shaped her upbringing and continue to influence her work today. Set the Mood with KOE!

It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to KOE's vision of an opening set. He’s done an incredible job of setting the perfect mood with this mix. After playing events like Utrecht's Bang Out, DRLD Radio, and club OOST, I was eager to experience his sound in the context of an opening set. And I wasn’t disappointed.

In this set, KOE masterfully weaves together spacey sounds, hypnotic elements, and a slower tempo. He uses breakbeats and deep, atmospheric tones to draw you into the mix, creating a journey that builds gradually in energy. It’s an ideal opener, a set designed to lure you in while leaving room for what’s yet to come.

From KOE's perspective, his approach to music is about allowing listeners to disconnect from their surroundings, even if just for a moment. Influenced by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jean-Michel Jarre, Oscar Mulero, and Pink Floyd, KOE is drawn to sounds with hypnotizing qualities. Normally, he gravitates toward faster, more minimal and groovy techno filled with pads and repetitive synthesizers.

In his eyes, a perfect opening set isn’t just about the tracks played, but about what remains unsaid—what is left for the crowd to desire. This approach sets the stage for the DJs who will follow, while establishing a sense of tension and curiosity among the audience.

To incorporate that in his set, KOE has chosen slower, lower-energy tracks than what he typically plays. With smooth transitions and an intentional avoidance of big, explosive moments, he creates an air of mystery that is still deeply danceable. The slow, steady mixing keeps the atmosphere unpredictable yet inviting.

I hope you enjoy this carefully crafted experience as much as I do. It’s a journey into sound where every detail has been considered, inviting you to be drawn in the music.

Hi everyone! This week, I’m thrilled to share a mix that proves an opening set can be undeniably sexy. With groovy tracks, irresistible percussion, and a steady rhythm, this mix is designed to keep you moving. It draws you in from the very first beat, setting the stage perfectly for what’s to come.

PIEN takes the decks this week, a 26-year old DJ based in Deventer, The Netherlands. For her, the ideal opening set is one that captivates the crowd without being too overwhelming. It should ease the audience into the night, creating a smooth flow of energy while leaving space for other DJs to bring their own magic. For this podcast, she experimented with varying energy levels to strike that balance. Each track she chose has its own unique character and carries a subtle, sultry vibe. 

Over the years, PIEN has used techno as a canvas to channel her creativity into the scene. Her focus has always been on danceability; creating an atmosphere where passionate music lovers like herself can lose themselves in the moment.

Set the Mood with Koot!

For this Christmas week, I invited Koot to create an opening set, and I thoroughly enjoyed the set he delivered!

Koot, full name Sander Koot, is an artist that’s currently based in Rotterdam but was born and raised in Utrecht.

In terms of style, his sets are best described as deep, atmospheric and heavily layered. Using tracks as tools, he always looks for tracks that contain interesting elements and textures to create depth in his sets.

He feels opening sets are often underappreciated, especially as the techno scene seems to focus on ‘harder, faster, stronger’. He enjoys (opening) sets most when they’re nuanced and slowly but steadily increasing in intensity. Requiring some patience from visitors of an event, but making the overall experience much more rewarding.

Other than DJ’ing himself, Koot expresses his love for electronic music by occasionally hosting small-scale livestream events in a local record shop (Nooit Gewoon) as well as a podcast series with his own platform called Focal Point.

For the 39th episode, I invited Sophie Bruin to share her vision of an opening set. Her musical journey has already taken her to places like Mystic Garden, Club BASIS, Nachtcollege, and By The Creek – and rightfully so. This time, she’s letting us in on how she approaches an opening set.

Listening to this mix, I immediately feel how it starts off slow and dreamy, pulling you into a kind of trance. The atmosphere is warm and hypnotic, with a gentle energy that will give off the right starting energy. As the set progresses, the tracks gain more depth, the tempo picks up, and the energy slowly rises. By the end, you’re fully immersed, carried along by the flow. It’s an absolutely beautiful opening set!

"Opening sets feel more personal to me because they give you the freedom to play what you feel in the moment and experiment. Connecting with the few people who are already there feels more intimate, and you become more aware of the details—both in the music and in the room. It’s a special chance to set the tone for the rest of the night (or day).

I usually enjoy a slow and steady build-up, but sometimes it’s nice to play with energy levels—going back and forth a little to create tension and give people a taste of what’s coming. I try to pull listeners into a trance, to really bring them into the music. For me, there’s no such thing as a 'perfect' opening set—I just love the creative freedom it gives me. 🙂"

For HÅKK, a perfect opening set is all about setting the right atmosphere for the night or event. By carefully building tension and mood, he creates a space where a wide range of sounds and emotions can unfold. His approach guides the dancefloor into a hypnotic state while always maintaining a certain groove to keep the energy flowing.

HÅKK is a 25-year-old DJ and producer from Oosterhout, Noord-Brabant. His musical journey began at a young age when he started playing the guitar, but over time, his passion evolved toward techno. In the summer of 2023, he officially embarked on his career as a DJ and producer, dedicating himself to refining his unique sound and performance style.

His style can be described as hypnotic, groovy, and bouncy. While he has spent the past two years mastering high-energy, fast-paced sets, he is now exploring a deeper and slower approach, allowing his music more room to breathe and evolve organically.

Beyond DJing, HÅKK is also the co-owner of Henosis, a platform dedicated to strengthening the underground scene and fostering a tight-knit community of techno artists and enthusiasts.

I'm honored to introduce HSOP as the 45th guest in the Set the Mood series. Based in Amsterdam, she is a DJ, producer, yoga instructor, and partner at Donker, an independent label and collective that offers artists a platform to explore and express their darker musical identities.

For HSOP, a perfect opening set is all about subtlety, patience, and connection. She imagines the first moments of the night: people slowly entering the space, grabbing a drink, exchanging a few words, and beginning to settle into the energy of the room. To her, this early phase is not about making a statement, it's about creating space. The music must invite rather than demand, offering a natural, unforced transition into the evening. Her sets in this context are intentionally restrained, keeping the energy low and fluid for most of the performance, gently shaping the mood to match the unique lineup and setting of the night.

Her sound normally blends rolling basslines with shadowy textures, broken rhythms, and industrial edges, all anchored by a deep low-end presence. There’s a raw intensity in her selections, but it’s always balanced by an intuitive sense of flow. A hypnotic quality that keeps listeners locked in.

Recently, HSOP made her debut at Radion as part of an all-female lineup, marking an important milestone in her artistic journey. Whether she’s behind the decks, crafting in the studio, or leading a yoga session, she explores the space between power and restraint, always driven by a desire to connect through her art.

This mix is a reflection of that ethos; an immersive, slow-burning build that perfectly sets the mood. It’s a thoughtful approach, and one that reflects the kind of artist HSOP is.

I’m excited to introduce Lenz, who made a opening set as the 45th guest in the Set the Mood series. As a DJ and co-founder of the collective De After, he’s created a platform to express his vision of the underground. His passion for techno was born on the dancefloors of illegal raves, a love that naturally pulled him from the crowd into the booth. Musically, Lenz stands apart from current techno trends. He roots for hypnotic patterns, shadowy atmospheres, and relentless, percussive drive. His sound is rooted in the heavier side of early-2000s techno, and his signature style is layered, pounding, and immersive. This has made him a staple across the Netherlands, with appearances at clubs like Paradiso, Club Atelier, and Club Basis. This mix is a deep dive into that world, only as a opening set.

For Lenz, the perfect opening set walks a delicate line between dark, ambient textures and driving percussion. His aim is to draw listeners into a dreamy, almost trance-like state while still making them want to move. That’s when they hit "flow." It’s not about overwhelming energy from the start, but about a subtle progression that invites the crowd to surrender to the music. The goal? To make people dance, crave more, and still have enough fuel to last the entire night. With that in mind, he challenged himself to begin this mix as slowly and intentionally as possible, settling into a steady 130 BPM groove from the start.

For Lamique, crafting the perfect opening set is about more than just selecting tracks. It's a delicate balance shaped by multiple factors. The venue, the time slot, the rest of the line-up, and, most importantly, the energy of the crowd all play a role in determining the direction of his set. For him, a true opening set is about setting the tone for the night and filling the room with the right kind of energy.

With this mix, Lamique imagined opening in a dark, smoky venue as the first dancers begin to arrive, eager and ready to move. It's the kind of atmosphere where rhythms take control and the music becomes the main focus. The night ahead promises groovy, high-energy techno, and Lamique sets the stage with just the right mood.

At just 21 years old, Lamique is already bringing undeniable groove and rhythm to the dance floor. His musical journey began with a love for hip hop, which gradually evolved as he explored new genres. After attending his first festivals at 18, his passion for electronic music truly ignited. Now, as co-founder and resident of Elevate, he is carving out a name for himself in Amsterdam’s vibrant club scene.

As someone who deeply values arriving early to fully absorb the ambiance of an event, whether day or night, KAIKAINA believes in the power of the opening set. For Dica, a perfect opening set marks the beginning of a complete experience. It is an opportunity to create, tease, surprise, experiment, challenge, and draw the crowd toward the center front. An opening set is not just a warm-up, but a space to shape the energy of the night to come.

Dica began collecting vinyl in the early nineties and started DJing a few years later. Over the years, he has played at numerous venues and radio stations along the west coast of Holland. Today, Dica remains committed to vinyl-only sets, blending acid with electro, synth, wave, disco, techno, electronica, and anything else that fits in between. His signature sound is raw, dramatic, haunting—and always drenched in acid.

Set the Mood with Creznight!

This 63rd edition of Set the Mood captures the essence of how Creznight first fell in love with techno. When he stepped into a club for the very first time, the room was still empty, but he was instantly hooked. The music wasn’t heavy yet, but it was beautiful. There was space between the sounds, carried by deep, rolling basslines. Even though it was loud, it didn’t feel harsh. The smoke filled the air, and the atmosphere was mysterious, with pads and subtle strings adding melody in the background. The bass felt warm, almost like it was breathing with the room. For Creznight, it was a spiritual feeling.

To him, that’s the essence of an opening set. It should feel calm but alive, full of variety without being overwhelming. It’s about building slowly, guiding the energy step by step, always one move ahead of the crowd. In his opinion, the hardest, and most important, slot of the night is the opener. Without a strong opener, the vibe can be ruined before it even begins. He compares it to waking up fully stressed—you spend the whole day recovering.

That’s why Creznight believes an opening set should have a sense of predictability and flow, but never fall into monotony. It should explore deeper sounds, with enough variety to keep the room engaged and gradually evolve into something more danceable for the next DJ. In this mix, he has leaned into that deeper side, creating a warm, rolling journey that starts subtle and builds into movement.

As the owner of Oefenmeesters, one of our own, Creznight carries that same vision into his wider work: creating spaces, sets, and experiences that inspire growth, connection, and flow.

For him, a perfect opening set is not about going full force from the very beginning, but about creating a foundation. He sees it as a chance to guide a room into a flow that sparks curiosity about what is still to come, while setting the tone for the rest of the night.

Florian Laurent is a 29-year-old artist from Arnhem. Music has always played a central role in his life, not only as something to listen to, but above all as a way to create atmosphere and translate emotions. When he first started playing, he quickly realized that it was never just about mixing tracks together. For him, it was about telling a story. Behind the decks, he shapes a journey in which tension, emotion, and energy flow seamlessly into one another.

His sets often begin dreamy and melodic, allowing the listener to slowly settle into the flow. From that light and floating start, he builds the tension step by step, with the music becoming darker, more hypnotic, and more intense.

In terms of style, Florian moves within the deeper and hypnotic currents of techno, combined with groovy, minimalist, and rhythmic elements. He has a love for repetitive patterns, dark textures, and tight rhythms that slowly lock together. For him, music must be more than just sound. It should be something that can be felt, as if the space itself transforms and the listener can completely lose themselves in the flow.

Florian draws inspiration from artists and movements that seek balance between subtlety and intensity. He avoids quick peaks or forced drops, instead focusing on a steadily rising tension that pulls the audience further into depth. In this way, he creates sets that not only carry energy but also form a hypnotic journey in which the crowd can sink in and let themselves be carried away.

Usually dabbling in electro, dub, garage, and bass, and in earlier years immersed in house, italo, techno, and more ambient sounds, Dieze has always kept a wide-ranging collection. For this Set the Mood mix, he has gathered tracks he had long been eager to play but could not fit into other sets. Through this selection, he has sought to embody the qualities he values in an opening journey, and he hopes it resonates.

As the 68th guest of the Set the Mood series, DJ and visual artist L-Tuziasm presents his vision of a perfect opening set. For him, it is about creating space for visitors to arrive, setting the atmosphere for the beginning of the night, and gradually building it together. With his broad record collection, sense of mood, and joy behind the decks, he offers glimpses of what lies ahead, shaping a musical prologue that sets the tone for a beautiful evening.

L-Tuziasm began playing vinyl at the age of fifteen and soon found his way into the Utrecht underground through parties and encounters with other DJs. In the early 2000s he became a familiar face in the city’s techno scene. He performed at events ranging from squats to legal venues, and between 2000 and 2010 co-organized intimate parties such as Sound of Chill-Style, Back to Techno, TechniekLokaal, and the monthly night Chillegal Beats at ACU. His sets took him from canal cellars to venues like Tivoli de Helling and other stages across the Netherlands.

His style, which he describes as Technorientated music, is a versatile blend of influences from techno, house, and related genres in the broadest sense. The result is an energetic and rhythmic musical experience.

Over the years, his focus gradually shifted towards visual art. Today, L-Tuziasm is active mainly as an artist, with work visible in public spaces, galleries, and art venues. Yet his love for music remains just as strong. His record collection continues to grow, and from time to time he returns to the decks with the same passion, joy, and sharp ear for the dance floor.

For his Set the Mood mix, L-Tuziasm carefully crafted an opening set performed entirely on vinyl, using two decks and a simple two-channel mixer without effects. This no-nonsense approach brings DJing back to its purest form: enjoyment, selection, timing, and feeling. The mix is a journey through twenty-five years of electronic music on vinyl, ranging from deep underground tracks to more accessible records, all combined into a diverse whole. In his own words, it is Technorientated music — a personal style where influences from techno, house, and related genres come together.

As the 69th guest of the Set the Mood series, Hedemann shares her vision of what a perfect opening set should be. For her, an opening set is all about guiding people into a certain mood. The music is there to draw the crowd in and prepare them for what is yet to come. It is a dialogue of questions and answers: starting slower, deeper, with light percussion, then gradually offering more to spark excitement, before easing back into calmer tracks. She plays with energy in a way that warms up the floor without rushing, carefully building tension to keep people longing for more, hyped and intrigued.

Detail and subtlety are central to her approach. By weaving soundscapes that immerse the audience while keeping the energy low, she creates space for anticipation. The key lies in evolving without the crowd even noticing, like a slow-cooked meal that gains depth and flavor with time.

Hedemann is a techno DJ and producer from the Netherlands whose sound spans a wide spectrum, from groovy percussive techno to raw old-school driving techno. Her sets are unmistakable, filled with hypnotic atmospheres and driven by a powerful rhythm that delivers both adrenaline and predictability. It is just enough to let the audience fully surrender to the moment. On the dance floor, her music makes people feel energized, welcome, and free. It is more than a sound; it defines the experience.

Her love for music began at an early age, when she would daydream about performing on stage. Hip-hop first captured her imagination, until her first rave changed everything. From that moment, she envisioned herself behind the decks. During the lockdown years, she gained invaluable experience playing at illegal raves, sharpening her craft in front of raw and unpredictable crowds.

Since then, Hedemann has performed at renowned venues such as Oost in Groningen, Heineken Experience Hall in Amsterdam, and De Pip in The Hague. Internationally, she has played at Groundless Factory in Beijing and GreenFest in Kosovo.

Beyond her performances, Hedemann carries a deeper mission to nurture balance within the electronic music scene. She believes people attend techno events for more than just the music. They come to feel, to escape, to reconnect. Her goal is to keep the scene both musically intense and mentally grounded. Wild, yet in balance.

For the 70th edition of the Set the Mood series, the spotlight turns to UNALOME, a techno DJ based in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Embodying the essence of her name, which signifies the path of freedom, UNALOME’s sets are a vibrant fusion of organic elements, psychedelic textures, and tribal rhythms. Her sound ranges from deep and dubbed-out to more groovy and driving techno. She enjoys blending these different shades, bridging music from the past and the present.

For UNALOME, a perfect opening set is shaped by the atmosphere of the moment — the vibe, the time, the location, and the artists on the lineup. This philosophy inspired the idea behind this podcast: to record her opening set at Balans. Capturing that moment live felt like the most authentic approach.

Unfortunately, her recorder failed during the set. But with the records still fresh in her memory and bag, she decided to re-record the mix exactly as she played it the night before.

Balans is a techno event and label based in Nijmegen, curated by Tripeo and Locus Error. It’s a night created by and for true electronic music enthusiasts, which makes it something truly special.

For this edition, UNALOME had the honor of opening the night for two powerhouse women in the scene: OZUM and INEL. She began her mix deep and dubby, gradually building up the energy as the night unfolded.

A producer and DJ based in Kyoto, Japan, his sound crafts a percussive, ritualistic take on techno, blending mysterious rhythms with subtle tension to evoke deep emotion. Driven by a profound connection to sound, his sets unfold as immersive journeys, where resonant frequencies align with the body’s pulse.

For Yuddy Ash, a perfect opening set is about creating space. That space serves as a doorway from the everyday to the extraordinary.

When shaping this mix, he envisioned a modest underground club, not too large, on a Friday night slowly turning into Saturday. It is a one-hour slot that begins exactly at midnight.

To him, techno is an aesthetic of repetition. He aims to create an inviting sense of openness, drawing people in with groove without overwhelming them too soon.

In his view, the DJ’s presence ideally remains anonymous, as the true protagonist is the music itself and the space it creates. Across the full sixty minutes, the set unfolds like a single track, guiding listeners into this shared space. It hints at the night’s direction, builds tension gradually, shapes the atmosphere, and always leaves room for curiosity.

After a few weeks away, we are back with the next chapter of the Set the Mood series and are delighted to introduce Lirio as the seventy second guest. For Lirio a perfect opening set means creating a warm and immersive atmosphere and a safe space for personal expression. Calm and meditative tracks allow the listener to get grounded and feel comfortable at the beginning. Deep and hypnotic sounds then invite movement into the body and calmness into the mind. To keep it grooving, rhythmic and tribal elements bring texture and a natural feeling and keep the listener engaged and relaxed. For her this opening set becomes a journey through the flow of energy within and around oneself.

Lirio explores the sounds of the deep, groovy and hypnotic realm while trying to keep it warm and diverse. Her sets can be more energetic and fast paced or slower with a more nurturing energy. She remains open to other sounds and keeps it experimental, delivering music that stays closest to her heart.

I am happy to introduce the seventy fourth guest of the Set the Mood series: ØRSHE. For her, the perfect opening set is more than the beginning of a night; it is the starting point of a journey. It marks the moment where listeners are invited to step slowly into her world, where darkness, depth, and hypnotic energy begin to unfold.

Originally from Hungary and now based in the Netherlands, ØRSHE crafts a sound rooted in the dark and hypnotic essence of techno. Her love for the genre began during her studies in Germany, where Berlin’s clubs and underground energy shaped her connection to rhythm and intensity. Her music is straightforward and driving, built on heavy 909s, raw percussion, and deep, evolving grooves. Moving between darkness, hypnotic layers, and groove, her sets create a focused energy that draws listeners in and keeps them there. Influenced by the raw German sound and the open, forward spirit of the Dutch scene, she delivers pure and immersive techno, powerful, precise, and always made for the floor.

Her vision of an opening set reflects the same world. For ØRSHE, an opening is not simply a warm up; it is the first step into this darker universe. It becomes a slow gateway, a realm that begins to pull listeners in and does not let them go. Sounds appear like an enchanted forest, triggering subconscious myths and allowing a magical dream to form. It leaves the audience wanting more, getting lost in a space where time dissolves and reference slowly disappears. This is how the journey begins into her world.

I am pleased to introduce Lorenzo Sanchez as the 75th guest of the Set the Mood series. Hailing from Utrecht, The Netherlands, Lorenzo Sanchez is an artist whose sets are driven by healing and destructive frequencies that circulate throughout his sound.

Unpredictable in nature, his performances take the listener through hypnotic landscapes and multidimensional expressions. Expect the unexpected, moving from minimal to maximum, from rusty and raw, to smooth and refined.

For his Set the Mood opening set, Lorenzo Sanchez created a progression that guides the listener and allows them to drift into frequencies that feel at times familiar and at times alien. Variation is key in his approach, as every transition is meant to spark a different emotion, ranging from energy to introspection. The result is a progressive journey that is not only heard, but truly experienced.
