Matt O’Brien returns to the Off-key Industries label with this diverse slice of underground engineering, spanning the entirety of rave’s connective tissue. From ocean-deep analog workouts that wouldn’t be out of place in a classic John Carpenter horror, to pristine & hypnotic dub house sparkling up from the abyss, this EP highlights Matt’s virtuosity in multiple genres, but always with the same signature warmth and depth.

“Delicate Ambiguity” sees a fragile melody wind its way out of smog-like miasma of reverberating industrial bass, evoking a future past, reminiscent of krautrock innovators such as Neu! and Monoton, a dark slice of cinematic, electronic soul. A soundtrack for the best film you’ve never seen.

“It’s Deeper than you think” takes a left turn into hypnagogic deep house territory with slivers of glinting metallic stabs floating on a sea of pulsating bass and sculpted 4/4 beats, serving as a counterpoint to "Delicate Ambiguity's" Mariana Trench depths.

“To The Break Of Day And Beyond” returns to a mournful reflective, meditative space, with mellifluous synths sparkling under smeared analog drones, gradually giving way to explosive breakbeats & sub bass, reminiscent of some of Carl Craig’s most innovative rhythmic work, bringing the EP to a shuddering close.

Although the years since 2020 have been very productive, I’ve held back from releasing much. It took a long time to reconcile myself with the fact that this label would now be primarily Digital and so here we are.

I now have a bunch of tracks which I still really like but which don’t sit well with any of my newer material. In the end I was faced with a decision to either let them go or have them sitting on my hard drive, gathering digital dust. So I’m going to let them go; some of them are fully formed, mixed and mastered. Some of them are demos. All of them will be available for free download on Bandcamp. I’ll be uploading (sporadically) over the next few months, so keep an eye on my feed for further music.

To be honest, I haven’t really thought this through yet and I don’t know what kind of response this will get. Mostly I just want to stop procrastinating, release some music and try something different to see what happens…
