Night drive

This originally aired on the University of Pennsylvania's WXPN, in 1983, during Thom Dura's "Experimental Radio Project" show.  

In the months leading up to the broadcast, Jacqueline Alala, provided me with a cassette recording of a recent visit with her friend while he was working as a caretaker at a bird sanctuary. She suggested I use her document for an experimental tape manipulation process I was developing.  

The process involved using a number of portable cassette player recorders, a couple of microphones, and a foot pedal effects processor called, the "Memory Man."

Lacking a mixer, I would create "multitrack" mixes or "bounce" tracks by playing a couple of decks at once while using another to record the output through the speakers of each.

One deck had buttons for rewinding and forwarding while in play mode so you could hear the cueing.  I used these buttons to create a rhythmic effect during one segment of this piece.  A sort of dj scratching effect but with cassettes.

With this process, I would also make a copy of the source tape and play back both the source and copy tape at once. Since the decks speed varied to a small a degree, a phase shifting effect would result.

Sometimes I would send the signal from the headphone jack through the Memory Man plugged into my home stereo system and record that.

Equipped with a pc, a decent sound card and Sonic Foundry applications, I fed the tape signal into the pc for further manipulation during August of 2004.  This mostly entailed ridding most of the tape hiss noise and editing the original 15 minutes or more down to 6 minutes.

Note that Jacqueline's source tape document was a spontaneous field recording aiming to record her friend's attempt to make one of the birds say, "Hello".  The result  perhaps coaxed along by the sounds of an album of Fripp and Eno playing the background.

The serie of Sudden Archives (a spectral recollection) are 10" dubplates.
All those tracks have been playing, recording and cutting in Circuit in Lausanne(Switzerland)during the Recording Memory Sessions (nov-dec 2014).
They are based on graphic scores for solo musician composed by Julien Sirjacq feat. The Bells Angels.

The recordings come together in a boxset (20 ex.) signed and numbered. 

Sudden Archives - Laurent Bruttin Face B

Its not the act but the space in between... segment from a longer wooden megaphone recording made in a snow covered forest in southeastern Estonia with a group of visiting students from the Estonian Academy of Music (CoPeCo - Contemporary Performance and Composition program www.copeco.net). Everyone was distributed about the forest roughly 40-60 meters from the microphones. Recorded on my Tascam DR-100mkIII using two Primo EM172 omni microphones that were placed 2 meters off the ground.
