Consumerism and freedom
The song "Society," performed by Eddie Vedder, directly criticizes the relationship between consumerism and personal freedom. The line "We have greed with which we have agreed" highlights how society accepts, almost without question, the constant pursuit of more material goods. This idea connects to the story of Christopher McCandless, portrayed in "Into the Wild," which inspired the song. McCandless abandoned everything to pursue a more authentic life, free from the pressures of consumerism and social expectations.
The lyrics also emphasize that the search for "more" is never complete: "And you think you have to want more than you need / Until you have it all you won't be free." Vedder, interpreting Jerry Hannan's composition, suggests that true freedom is only possible by breaking this cycle. The line "Society, you're a crazy breed / Hope you're not lonely without me" has an ironic, farewell tone, demonstrating the narrator's distance from prevailing values. By asking, "But if less is more, how are you keeping score?", the song points out that even simplicity can be transformed into competition.
