07. Heatwave And Itti - Integrate

We’re excited to announce #CNVR004! - To better understand the concept of this album, we need to go back in time, maybe 15 years or so when PH42E (@ph42e) and JSwift (@jonathan_swift) joined forces, crossing and blending multiple music genres and influences on different bands. Following a breakup with a band where they explored jazz, chill, electronic and jungle influences as musicians and producers, they decided to continue with their creative pursuit producing and playing music together.

From the very beginning, their work was all about the mind, the deep, heavily influenced by the autonomic movement, displaying extreme accuracy, maturity and aesthetical sense. As they were getting some attention with their exquisite work, they had the oportunity to do some collabs with fellow friends and companions, such as @ylsmusic (as seen on their first releases on @skalatormusic), @goncaloincendiario, and also taking James Powell out of his comfort zone as a rock vocalist and bringing him to uncharted territories; During this period they got some of these tunes played on @loxy_x ’s CX Podcasts and Bulb’s Into the Deep, amongst others, providing them a special spotlight not only on the Portuguese scene, but also outside borders, bringing them to major lineup events and well deserved recognition.

Way before expanding and exploring new horizons on production techniques and musical outcomes and becoming what we know them today for, “Early Reflections” is an album compiling some of the early and deep works of @n-e-u-r-o-t-o-x-i-n, a time capsule and an ode to the golden days of the Autonomic universe.

Originally released as a 4 track 2x12" vinyl on Subtle Audio in 2009, a very limited 10 track Subtle Audio CD version followed in 2010 before a licensing deal with Rephlex Records saw the CD widely distributed along with 3 (digital only) bonus tracks. Now that the licensing term with Rephlex has come to an end, we're releasing all 15 tracks from the 3 different formats in one digital download. Seems fitting to do it now, seeing as we are celebrating Subtle Audio's 10th Birthday this year and it's 5 years since the original release of this album.

"Time to enter the insane, weird, drum-centric world of Macc & dgoHn as the Subtle Audio camp proudly delivers its first album long player by this pair of not altogether insane East Londoners.

Subtle Audio has been pushing Drum & Bass with a slighly different slant since 2005 and this album could well be presented as their mission statement, it sums up the distinctive sound of the label perfectly.

Macc & dgoHn favour a breakbeat driven style and they incorporate their beats into ever shifting cinematic arrangements brim full of attitude and experimentation. Individually, their sounds have travelled far beyond the Drum & Bass microcosm and their work has been aired by the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. Aphex Twin is also an admirer and his festival playlists have contained Macc or dgoHn on more than one occasion. Now they unleash a volley of material from their collaborative archive which is set to disarm critics who thought Drum & Bass had run out of rhythms, arrangements and silly album titles. David Louis brings his absolute best to the table with this blazing 5-track EP. Half-time, Amens and the self-described “sweet spot”; ruff and rolling thumpers for the underground heads. 

Album entitled ‘Fuego’ was crafted years ago on a lousy pair of headphones and equally low-grade Bluetooth speakers. This one is an absolute testament to being about what you do rather than what you have. 

‘Future’ is a stealthy roller, featuring beautiful sound design and structure from Stranjah, which was then emphasized and built on by David. A classic clash between the two beat freaks, this is another tune with the party-party massive in its crosshairs. 

‘Bloodcloth’ is a take on the classic “Alex Reese Break”, with chopped up vocals and a screaming Reese line. This one is aimed directly at the dance floor and for the DJ’s ready to unleash it. 

‘Ghetto D’ was originally scheduled for release on Ronin Ordinance but never saw the light of day. An euphoric amen burner with intensifying atmospherics and a classic sample from which the title of this track was born. 

‘Metaphysics’ was also slated for Ronin Ordinance and we are grateful that they’ve given us the green light to put it out. Another personal favourite of David’s own productions, this one is a futurized, half-time interpretation and nod to to the greatly influential film within the realms of drum and bass, Bladerunner.
