THE TRANCE EMPIRE episode 311 with Rodman

Hi guys, thanks for checking out this track of mine.

I actually started this in January 2023 and was almost ready to release it after Maelstrom and Sunrise but for various reasons I decided to hold on the release.

It wasn't until completing The Man with No Name earlier this year that I decided to revisit Afterlife's production and tweak it with a new bassline, some new drums and fx sounds.

The melody and arrangement are the same as they were originally but I feel it's now a more complete track than it otherwise would have been. Enjoy!

Rodman - Afterlife (Original Mix)

Hi and thanks for checking out this track of mine.

This one's called Tidal Wave and is a 138bpm Tech Trance record. An interesting fact about this track is that I actually started using the main melody as part of an earlier track, which was going to be called Jupiter but I never got round to finishing it.

So many moons later I started again with the melody but went in a different direction and the production evolved far easier and more organically than the previous attempt. That's the funny thing about music, usually the quicker it comes together the better it is. The harder you have to work at it, the more forced and unnatural it can sound.

So yes, Tidal Wave was born in April 2024 after a week of production time. I'm really happy with the final result, I hope you are too.

P.s. the original intro melody I had planned to use when the track was to be called Jupiter has actually been put to use on another track of mine called Revolutions, so look out for that one.

This track Solarstorm has been another of mine which has been about two years in the making, purely because when I started it I was still learning a great deal about music production. As time went by and my skills improved, both from a production standpoint and a mixing and mastering standpoint, I kept revisiting the track, implementing techniques and process which I had learned to improve upon what I had previously done.

Solarstorm is at the point now where I am happy with the result and feel ready to release it to the world. Like other tracks of mine it's a blend of tech and uplifting Trance elements and I've used a funky bassline pattern for both the intro and outro sections to give it a bit more flavour than just an off-beat or rolling pattern throughout. I actually think the funky bassline has a 'Smooth Criminal' feel to - just a lot faster.

So here you go, my new track 'Solarstorm'. I hope you like it.

This is my remix that I did for the Think Trance Records / Metta & Glyde 'Celestia' remix competition in December 2023. Winners were announced in February 2024.

Remix Background

Some details about this remix you may be interested in. When I submitted my interest in this remix, I was given a pack of files containing the original track's MIDI (the musical notes for melodies) and a selection of audio samples used in the original which I could choose whether or not to include in my remix.

One of the audio samples in the pack was the female vocal sound which to me stood out as the key element to use in my remix; the sound which the whole track should revolve around. I think it's fabulously atmospheric and just sounds gorgeous. So, I really wanted to make a feature of this sample.

I wanted my remix to be drastically different to the original. With Metta & Glyde's original produced at 140bpm in a traditional "Uplifting Trance" format, I decided to slow my version down to 135bpm and present a more tribal, tech, progressive sound.

Within the MIDI pack I mentioned were the chord progressions for the atmospheric backing synths. The timing of these chord progressions was across eight bars - which I felt was too short to give prominence to the progression and development of the chords. So, I doubled their length across sixteen bars which really helped to highlight the beautiful changes in the chords. What this also did was have the effect of slowing the pace of the track. The original I feel sounds somewhat frenetic, this remix of mine just slows everything down and brings out fundamental elements of the track which I felt were perhaps not given the prominence they deserved in the original.

Lastly, the most notable difference between mine and the original is that I haven't included any of Metta & Glyde's main melody. As with the chord progressions, the main melody was across eight bars. Having doubled the length of the chord progressions the same needed to be done with the melody, which just didn't work, so I decided to leave it out altogether. However, in doubling the length of the chords and producing them with an ethereal string instrument I felt they sounded commanding and prominent, so decided to continue with them as the lead instrument and melody.

There you go, a few insights into my mindset and production techniques when creating this remix. I haven’t set out to offend anyone, music is subjective, we’re all entitled to our opinions.

The track was produced, mixed, and mastered by myself and I'm very proud of it. I hope you like it too.

So here is my track 'The Chronic' and believe me when I say there's quite a story behind it.

‘The Chronic’ is not a new track. Yes, at the time of writing this the track had only just been released on Gold Standard Recordings a few days earlier (August 2nd 2024). But both the origin and genesis of this track go way back to 2010 when I was 27, trying to build a name for myself as a DJ under a different alias - Kryztow De Fier (pronounced fire).

Through running my own club nights ‘Kubik’ in the mid noughties 2004-07 I had made various contacts including producers. One of those producers was a chap called John Saxon. At the time, unlike now, I had very little ability when it came to producing music of any kind, so I would engage the services of a 'ghost producer' to create tracks for me.

I met with John, who at the time was living in Manchester, UK, as was I, and we arranged to meet up a couple of times a week at his place and lay down some beats in his home studio.

We probably did three tracks together taking inspiration from other tracks I was enjoying at the time, but then the thunderbolt moment struck. I was enjoying a track called 'The Wolf' by Paul Webster at the time, so John had a listen and started creating what would eventually become 'The Chronic'. As you can hear the lead melody sound and pattern is similar to 'The Wolf' but we wanted it to have a more aggressive edge.

Believe me when I say that John was a very talented producer, he did all the technical production tricks like the sound design, the writing of instrumental melodies along with the mixing and mastering. I basically just sat there next to him, but I like to think I was instrumental in the development of the track's sound and arrangement. You could say that John was the technical genius combined with my creative input and direction.

I ended up sending the track to Judge Jules who played 'The Chronic' for four consecutive weeks on his BBC Radio 1 show. He also played it in Godskitchen which I'll never forgive myself for having missed, along with various other gigs during that time. He visited a club in Manchester to which I did attend, he played it and I got the opportunity to meet with him in the DJ box and chat a bit. He said how much he liked the track and that he thought with a name like Kryztow De Fier I was Polish - which of course I'm not. I'm British haha.

I did release the first version of 'The Chronic' on a label I was trying to run back then called Kubik Records along with another track I did with John called ‘Bounce’, again played by Judge Jules twice on BBC Radio 1.

Unfortunately, there is a bitter-sweet ending to this tale. After working with John on those tracks we went our separate ways, harmoniously of course. There were no bad feelings between the two of us. John wanted to focus on his own projects. But it came to my attention a couple of years later that John had taken his own life.

Fast forward to April 2020 and I'm teaching myself the techniques and intricacies of Trance music production. It would take a further four years of practice and persistence developing my skills to professionally remake ‘The Chronic’ adding my own touches here and there, whilst keeping the song true to how John had originally produced it.
