The demographics of Indian Americans have changed from years past.

The 3 million individuals of Indian origin who currently reside in the United States arrived in two phases. The first came in the wake of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. Driven by a significant physician/scientist shortage, the 12,000 or so India-born immigrants a year arriving in this group were later accompanied by their families shortly after (30,000 relatives a year). This generation is now aging.

About two-thirds of Indian Americans have arrived in the ongoing third wave, dubbed “the IT generation.” Approximately one out of every three visas issued to India-born immigrants goes to residents of the high-tech Hyderabad area.

While previous generations of Indian Americans may have been conservative in their involvement in American society, be it going to Indian-only events, a lack of interest in Western sports, etc, this new generation has different ideas.

The American Dream endorses the free flow of information and culture. This is a two-way street, in that I can share my culture and heritage just as I take in its American counterpart each day. This album embodies that ambition, the hopes of The New Indian American.

The album is composed of 20 tracks that sample many parts of India (Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi) and combine them with Western beats/songs (Hip Hop, Reggaeton, EDM). Some include recordings of notable figures including Robin Williams, Tan France, and Donald Trump.

Each track has a specific theme/idea, covering everything from celebrating Punjabi comradery to innovating on dandiya/raas music. Two tracks focus on mental health. I originally wanted to create a separate album for this topic, but realized that compartmentalizing mental wellbeing is not conducive to wellness everyday.

I hope you enjoy the sound of this ambitious project. 
I can be my parent’s child, but also a global citizen participating in this great American discourse.

The Bajirao Mastani (2015) soundtrack is one of my favorite semi-classical works recently. When it first came out, I was so fascinated by how Sanjay Lee Bhansali paid homage to so many different Indian classical styles within a single track. "The songs cover genres of Marathi folk, Sufi, lavani, qawwali and Indian classical apart from fusion of different ragas in single tracks."

This mix is to symbolize Radha and Krishna play fighting through the generations.

The song "Radha Kaise Na Jale" in the movie Lagaan takes place when there's a love triangle developing, and 'Radha' starts getting jealous of 'Krishna', who is just having a good time. In the song, 'Krishna' reassures Radha that she doesn't need to feel jealous. ("Girls will come and go, but Radha is the queen of my heart...)

In the song 'Play Fight', singer THEY and Tinashe go back and forth in a 'play fight' that in some ways shared the angst and tension in 'Radha Kaise Na Jale' to me.

I recognize the references to Krishna and Radha and its significance. This mix is merely a creative expression.

I lived in Washington DC for two years, and I've learned, grown, and experienced a lot in that time. I made this mix as a celebration of my times here, as well as to represent the South Asian community here.

Mumbo Sauce is a wing sauce originating in Chicago in the 1950's/60's, that was introduced in Washington DC, and then popularized by Chinese takeouts in neighborhoods here. Just as those Chinese immigrants saw what was around them, made something their own, and developed a DC sub-culture around it, maybe the South Asian arts can do something similar. The Berklee Indian Ensemble writes that their original arrangement, 'Jaago Piya', "is a gentle, loving reminder to stay present, in the moment, to always be hopeful, and live a life filled with gratitude." While on a trip to Iceland, I stepped outside only to look up and find an aurora borealis in its full spectacle. I took a picture of it, which serves as the cover art for this track.

Kurai Onrum Illai (Tamil: குறை ஒன்றும் இல்லை, meaning No grievances have I) is a Tamil devotional song written by C. Rajagopalachari. The song set in Carnatic music was written in gratitude to Hindu God (Venkateswara and Krishna visualised as one) and compassionate mother.

Kurai Onrum Illai is one of the few songs written by Indian politician, freedom-fighter and Governor-General of India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari. According to Gopalkrishna Gandhi the song is an euphemism for the bhakti of untouchables (also known as Adi Dravidars or Harijans or Panchama).

The song was sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi in the Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Pancharatna Mala LP-2 (Long Play Record) (1979/80). This song is unique because it does not assume the tone of devoted prayer as most Hindu devotional songs but one of thankfulness to God. The song comprises 3 stanzas each set in three different ragas.

Kurai Onrum Illai is a very popular song in South India and is a regular in most Carnatic concerts. It became very famous after it was sung by M. S. Subbulakshmi.

Combining Indian Folk with Afrobeat! I have no idea how I came up with this idea, but somehow it worked amazingly well. This mix in particular is a testament that music truly has no borders.

ASTROWORLD is an incredible album - a blend of many different genres, fantastic music production, and an artist who used autotune artfully. There was a raw energy in NC-17 that I thought would work well with the exuberance of Dhoom Dhadakka from Namaste England (2018).

I've made some improvements in my arrangement technique and layering, and also added some of my own stuff on top of the mix.

Thrilled and honored to mark my return after almost a year with this piece, my take on "Kannodu Kanbathellam", a classic A.R. Rahman song, and one of his most popular carnatic works. This mix has been in the works on and off for almost 2 years, and incorporates plenty of original arrangements along with a fusion with the song "Wicked Games" by Parra for Cuva ft. Anna Naklab. Only people who know me personally will know with what deep reflection I conceptualized this mix. I hope you enjoy the sound.

The Origins Championship is a national collegiate Indian classical dance competition that showcases university teams from across the United States. Hosted by @siddkel and @drsrimix, I am honored to be involved in the first ever music album promoting the event. I hope that the Origins championship and this yearly album will enable Indian Americans to showcase their unique voice and heritage for decades to come. :)

I got so hyped from listening to Blinding Lights, with its sense of unbridled energy and unique synthpop sound, that it inspired me to further develop this message in a way that fit my cultural heritage and musical tastes. I’ve been a huge fan of Thaikkudam Bridge, an innovative Kerala-based band, and they had a track on their latest album that worked really well with the drive and brightness of “Blinding Lights”. This fusion mix incorporates rock, Hindustani classical, and synthpop.

oh and of course, Main Vari Vari, fom Mangal Pandey. That A.R. Rahman album is one of his best. totally slept on.

This track is inspired by my time immersed in South Asian Acappella. South Asian Acappella is an ever growing expression of identity for young Indian Americans. It definitely shaped my music awareness/perspective and gave me some of my most cherished friends. The mix here is an eclectic mix of Bad Bunny, reggaeton, and two teams from the South Asian Acappella scene in the US: University of Michigan Maize Mirchi (@maize-mirchi) w/ their cover of O...Saya, and Case Western Reserve University Dhamakapella (@dhamakapella) with their cover of Khwaja Mere Khwaja. The final choral sample after that is Scandinavian in origin, sung by a Polish group (Laboratorium Pieśni). So yea um... tagged it as 'World' lol.

Fun Facts:

Maize Mirchi recently competed in the ICCA 2020 Great Lakes Quarterfinals and placed Second, showcasing South Asian Acappella to a wider American audience. 

Dhamakapella recently released Fitoor, an interesting album both in terms of production and arrangement, and their cover of Khwaja Mere Khwaja is sampled here.

The cash register effect at 0:54 was a reference to Paper Planes, featured in the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire (O...Saya).

After making 'Carnatic Trap' in late 2014, I was looking to do more original Indian classical fusion mixes, so I remixed Aks' take on the "Karpagame", one of Papanasam Sivan's classic compositions on Devi ft. some excellent vocals by Jayanth Krishnamurthi. This is what I wrote about the mix when it released in 2015:

Steeped in thousands of years of rich tradition, Carnatic music is truly unique form of art that has ultimately become an important part of Indian heritage. Today, I proudly present my remix of  “Karpagame”, a famous piece composed by Papanasam Sivan during the 1930s. While the original song is in the Raga Madhyamavati, my remix is a Madhyamavati/Sree Hybrid. The piece incorporates a large breath of other musical influences, including jazz, western orchestration, a little Chinese influence, as well as plenty of hip hop. Headphones advised. Thank you all so very much for your continued appreciation of my work.
