A man has many names. 2030 is just one of them. Under this alias, Nico Campanella has released a cassette album as well as a recent 12″ on Clone, and now he’s landed on Black Crow with a super package of nostalgia-inducing electro backed with some stellar remixes. “In Aeternum” is a gorgeous cut, breathy synths leading the way down an early-90s path, a flurry of hi-hats darting forward at every turn while a rush of flutes and claps intermingle beautifully. “Timehop” follows a similar pattern, more wide-eyed and expansive perhaps, but no less impressive. Label bosses Deep’a & Biri contribute two intense remixes of the latter, but today we bring you a remix of “In Aeternum” from Detroit man Luke Hess. While the original is bright and spacious, this take is dark and robust. It kicks hard and heavy, its tones and feelings thick and warm, opening up only a long way in as the original’s synth theme comes to life.

Detroit's Burden Bros have long been looked upon with immense respect within contemporary dance music. Having been in operation since 1990 with their 430 West imprint they have long encapsulated the forward thinking vibe of Detroit Techno with their output over the last 20+ years, gaining praise from their motor city peers as well as fans worldwide. Having had success in the mainstream and an enduring underground presence they are well versed in the art of music.

'Point Blank', released on 430 West in 1996, feature some of the brothers' deeper, more subdued, futuristic technoid grooves. Not as driving as some of their other releases but retaining that Burden groove for sure, forward thinking, intelligent Techno from the D, 100%. 4 different versions of 2 tracks feature. Each mix tweaking ever so slightly what came before. As usual, the DJ's and the dancers are foremost in Octave One's mind and this EP will be welcomed by both contingents, always classic, often imitated but never bettered!

Aos’ boundless love for music is apparent in everything she does. As a producer, a DJ, and an event organizer with Seattle’s secondnature and TUF collectives, Kayla Waldorf’s vision eschews traditional categories and genre boxes in favor of an ecstatic spontaneity. Her DJ sets are well known for their playful energy and narrative threading between many different styles. Violent Light is Aos’ first offering on secondnature’s own label, and it captures this playful essence. 

The title track’s stomping groove (complete with rave whistle) sets the tone, while Lullaby and What/Why move into headier territory composed of dusty synths stabs and clouds of vocal effects. Finally, secondnature’s own Fugal delivers a remix that flips What/Why into a rolling depth charge.

For the faithful Skudge follower, number 13 brings back memories from when Skudge combined and reduced both Techno and House in a flawless way. Something that they have been able to do since the beginning. They also manage to utilize samples, that in another context would have felt misplaced, in a very classy manner.

Presented on the A-side, ’Clear’, where from the first note the resemblance of the now classic Skudge-sound gets optimized for the floors of today.

On the flip, we get an attention grabbing and tension inducing track called ’Wasp’ which carefully manages to evolve itself in a hypnotic and a bit erratic sound. Something that feels fresh in the hands of Skudge.

For fans and newcomers alike, this is a faithful Skudge record that will stick around.

Dedication to details, attention to structure and a tireless pursuit of that specific and circular sound. The contextual element of ’Time Tracks’ seem to be placed in-between the most cordial music that Skudge has presented up until now, as well as bridging the singularity and adrenaline from the previous albums and EP’s.

We are invited into a palette of vivid mastery of details, brushes of percussion and narrowed basses that shatters deep. Pads and strings which acts as a foundation, evolves the music to a rigid composure.

A sonic narrative that seem to stem from motifs of the Earth, reflections of personal flair and moments remembered, dwelling on records collected. ’Ifach’ serves as an ode to the legendary UK imprint. Combining ’Time Tracks’ into a stark collection of studio sessions that features colleagues Daniel Andréasson (on Function) and Samo DJ (on Ifach).

One could argue that this is a territory proven to tick all the functional boxes, but Skudge manages to yet again display a highly personal take in a realm of conciseness.
