A group of fish farmers operating in Agric area of Ojo Local Government are appealing to the Lagos state Government to intervene in their forceful eviction from there farm.

Flooding has continued to pose a challenge to Nigeria's most populous city with about 18milloin residents.
 

Flooding has been known to paralyse socio-economic activities whenever it occurs, atimes resulting in death and loss of properties.


Among factors identified to have increase its impact include, poor urban planning, indiscriminate disposal of waste among residents and encroachment on wetland and shore lands in the coastal state.

 
This report takes a general look at flooding, and what could be done to mitigate this environmental menance.

 

 

Curbing Flood in Lagos Nigeria

The Eko Atlantic City Project been undertaken by the Lagos State Government, has been described as contravening the rule of law and has become an impending disaster to environmental sustainability of Lagos.

An Environmental Law expert, Professor Lanre Fagbohun, stated this during a stakeholders forum on the Eko Atlantic City Project held in Lagos.

Differenet States in Nigeria most especially the food producing states, have been affected by flooding in the last three months.

This is begining to affect food supply and prices in Lagos, where most of the food consumed are transported from othe parts of the country.

Nigeria's compedium of laws recognised as the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is yet again being subjected to review by the nation's lawmakers in Abuja.

Some of the contentious issues raised by various stakeholders and which are on the front burners for review include, tenure of office, state police, fiscal federalism, state creation among others.

In the meantime, it has been advocated that Independence from the executive in the area of funding would improve their ability to take informed and independent decisions for the betterment of the state.

An Advocate of Good Governance, Miss Yemisi Ransome-Kuti stated this during a consultation forum on the position of Civil Society Organisations on the amendment of the 1999 constitution.

CONSTITUTION AND CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATION

There should be clarity in relation to declaration of state of emergency as it has been observed that continous contravention of the law is a challenge to the supremacy of the rule of law in a democratic process.

The review of this in the ongoing constitutiong amendment by the National Assembly, is what the non-governmental organisation, Justice Research Institute, demands from the nation's legislators during the exercise.

The Programme Co-ordinator, Justice Research Institute, Barrister Folusho Idumu spoke about this in a programme held in Lagos.

CONSTITUTION REVIEW AND RULE OF LAW

Nigerian  Minister of the Environment Hadiza Malaifa addressed the African Group at the ongoing  United Nation Climate Change Conference taking place in Doha Qatar.

The Conference called the Conference of Parties is in its eighteenth series COP 18 and brings together key stakeholders of member countries of the United Nation's.

The focus of the conference is to negotiate ways in which global carbon emission can be reduced, as the climate continues to change  with adverse impact experienced world wide.
