When Chinese laborers came to the U.S. in the 1800s, they brought traditional remedies with them. one of which was snake oil, a healthy treatment made from the Chinese water snake, 
rich in omega-3 fatty acids. But in the late 19th century, American sellers began making fake versions with no real snake oil in them. These fraudulent products caused the term "snake oil" to become synonymous with fake medicine.
