OMAR G. RAMIREZ
biography

The artistic process of Omar G. Ramirez stems from his capacity to navigate through various disciplines and methods to develop new works, projects, and installations.  Born in Boyle Heights and raised in the Mexican and Asian neighborhood of El Sereno in Los Angeles, California his work is pronounced by the political, aesthetics, and cultural experiences recognizable to first-generation working class people.  His proclivity to influence culture has evolved from the position of analyst and promoter for the Chican@ civil rights movement of the late 20th Century to a visual re-interpretation of the performance processes known as “digging” (collecting and archiving music) and “sampling” (the manipulation of pre-recorded sounds) rooted in Hip Hop culture.  After producing multiple site-and-situation specific art projects and being embedded in community cultural centers across the United States, Omar is able to generate new visual and performance work that connects politics, aesthetics, culture, and identity.

At a young age Omar was influenced by his Tios and Tias in Ocotlan Jalisco who made mixtapes and distributed them throughout the city.  Many of these mixtapes migrated across the country ending up in the United States.  He remembers sitting as young child watching and listening to the careful selections and recordings made from various formats: cassettes, LPs, radio recordings, and 8-tracks.  This would be the first time the curtain was pulled back on music selection and the introduction to Rasquachismo.   At home in El Sereno,  mornings began with his mothers selection of music via spanish radio and cassettes and lp's from their home music library.  Music was and is central to the conviviencia in his family.  The imprint that has left in him can be heard in his selection of tracks for radio programming,  the creation of tracks for his personal projects, and his approach to art and culture as a political act.  

Omar continues to develop new visual and audio works in his studio.  He is married with two children, all of which are active participants in his projects.
