DubN/A Sets - #6

As part of The Gun’s run of final events, I hosted 2 ‘Just Because’ nights, based on the premise that the DJs would not exceed 100bpm, unless it was in case of an emergency. I was able to invite some of my closest friends to play across the two nights, including Debonair, Nadia Ksaiba, Emma Rudge, Ilan and my b2b partner on this particular night, Matt Walsh. 

We go back a long way, going to all of the same parties in the mid-noughties, playing together a lot at Bugged Out, Wax:On and the like and even hosting our own weekly residency, High Horse, at the legendary T Bar (alongside Ben and Alex from the equally legendary Skull Juice).

Matt and I decided that it would be nice to share this set ahead of our gig together in Margate this Sunday 4th May at Faith In Strangers.

Completing the triumvirate is our pal Daniel Avery, who’ll be headlining the night.

If you manage to come up and make a mark on the Detroit scene, you are clearly doing something right. And that’s just how Derek Plaslaiko started: spinning his clinical yet sophisticated sets at various key raves around the Mid West of America before eventually establishing himself on the global underground circuit. Now, although Berlin based, you may caught his name on the flyer for the No Way Back parties (put on by Interdimensional Transmissions - the Detroit imprint that has put out several of Plaslaiko’s rare original releases) and is a resident for Bunker NYC and has been for years. He also releases his stylish brand of techno on the club’s in house label and has close ties with Ghostly International. Add to this the fact he played a sublime closing set at our festival back in August, and Derek is a natural choice to mix it up for our podcast series. 

The resulting two and a half hour selection is an exquisitely programmed ride through many shades of techno, from stripped back and thumping to eerie and heady via raw and nasty. Just when the pressure seems like it might get too much, Plaslaiko masterfully switches up the mood and takes you somewhere else, thus keeping you locked to his grooves. 

He says of the mix, “it was done in one take at the Resident Advisor offices in Berlin. The neighbours complained about the volume near the end of the recording, so I was forced to do the last few mixes headphones only. It's made up of about 60% current favourite tracks, and 40% unreleased material from a handful of friends. Kris Wadsworth, Jared Wilson, Todd Osborn, Dona, DVS1, Mr Statik, Secret Studio and Israel Vines all submitted tracks specifically for this mix. Will Lynch, Jim Beam and a massive amount of Burger King all played a major role in getting it done. I like a good story when hearing a DJ set, so that's what I was going for when programming the mix.

Our first guest for the series hails from Zurich, Switzerland, DJ Eli Verviene. Eli graced our shores down under in 2013 and again in 2014 playing at both Nightime Drama in Adelaide and 4our in Sydney.

Elis approach to djing is to tell her story through her sets, ensuring a diversity of genres, a warm energy and a style that is her own. Recording mixes in the past for the mnml ssgs blog and Resident Advisor, both of which she garnered enthusiastic responses, Eli has now recorded a mix for us at Nightime Drama. 1) Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Most definitely a night owl!

2) What is your home city and what makes it special?

Zurich is such a lovely city, which has a lot to offer for its size. Located at a beautiful lake surrounded by snowy mountains.

 3) The term DJ's DJ gets thrown around a lot these days, who is your DJ's DJ?

 4) What first comes to mind when you think of electronic music in Australia?

Well, most definitely a vivid and colourful underground scene created by passionate people. Even though, unfortunately, people on my side of the planet are not aware it. 

Ahead of my first visit in OZ, I didn't know what to expect. What a great surprise it was, to meet so many like-minded people which are so passionate about what they are doing. Not to forget that you have, in my opinion, one of the best record stores in the world in Adelaide - "Transition Records". Despite its relatively small size, the selection is exceptionally and it is impossible to leave the store without a gem.I truly hope that Australia's electronic underground scene will get its well deserved recognition.

5) What has been the stand out track that you've playing this month?

Autechre - Incunabula

It`s not a track but a whole album I have to mention. I've been waiting many years to have this gem on vinyl and now now it finally got re-pressed.

Icelandic's producer and DJ Ohm, 
has continued to stay true to the spirit of techno. 
Thru the 1990s, Ohm learned a deep foundation of the growing worldwide techno surge that by 1999, 
he felt he was creative and eager enough to start writing his own music. 
Success came quickly with his debut; a collaboration with fellow Icelandic legend Exos on Force Inc records. 
This led to over 20 releases since on standout labels like Thule records, Rawax, Kontakt, Solid Groove., Taped Artifact, Ranges, Vade mecum , 
Vuo records and AE Recordings, and AE recordings Ltd, which he co-ran with Octal Industries and Thor from Thule Records.
A chance meeting in a Berlin records store with Andrey Puskarev and Pola led to releasing some music on the acclaimed All In Records and their sublabel Nilla. Shortly after, 
a release on Andrey's own label Luck of Access with Octal Industries followed. 
Now Copenhagen based, his DJ career is equally impressive having been a regular guest at the hottest spot in his area, Culture Box. 
In the past, gigs at Germany's Tresor along with various places all around Europe to clubs back home in Iceland, 
Ohm's style of DJing is the culmination of over 30 years in the techno scene. Being a beloved personality in the scene, 
Recently, Ohm has started his own imprint, OHM Series. 
This label focuses on having releases that feature a mixture of well-beloved veterans and some vibrant new names pushing techno's sonic boundaries.
Highlighting this balance is a prime example where his techno integrity is the cornerstone of its operation. 
He's blending tried and true techno sounds with techno's next visionaries which we can all agree that is a worthwhile endeavor for the direction. 
Ohm also runs two shows on Timeline music online platform. 
One showcases some of the best Danish artists for the last 2 years and a second show sees him playing the latest promo's he receives from industry connections and friends. 
So, what does the future hold for Ohm? More of it all in short. More new Ohm music productions and remixes.
