Leave It All to Shine

The examination hall of Tomoiku Middle School was filled with a tension slightly different from usual. No wonder—at this school, students take exams in pairs, and their pass or fail is shared together. This unique format created bonds and pressure stronger than ever among the examinees.

Among them, one pair of twins drew particular attention. Haruto and Kanon looked alike in build, but their expressions and atmosphere were complete opposites.

Haruto crossed his arms with a confident smile.
“Pair exam? That’s easy for us. Even if you make a mistake, I’ll cover for you.”

Kanon frowned anxiously, whispering toward her desk.
“…What if I drag you down? You’re not perfect either, Haruto.”

Their exchange made the supervising teacher smile.
“Being twins doesn’t mean you’re always in perfect sync. What matters is trusting each other.”

The exam began. The subject was a pair-discussion problem: the two had to talk together and derive an answer to the given task. The assignment was: “If you were to create a new playground, what concept would be best?”

Haruto started eagerly.
“A sports area would be great! I want to build a basketball court where everyone can play.”

Kanon hesitated for a moment, then spoke up with determination.
“But small children or those who aren’t good at sports need a place too, don’t they? A corner for drawing or reading books would be nice…”

“That sounds too plain! It’s supposed to be a playground!” Haruto raised his voice.

“…Then let’s think together. A playground where you can be active, but also spend time quietly—how could we design that?” Kanon’s tone was serious.

Haruto fell silent for a moment, then muttered.
“You know… a place like that might be nice. I’d probably go there sometimes too.”

The twins debated until the very last minute, finally presenting this proposal:
“‘The Playground of Motion and Stillness’—a place where you can move your body with equipment and courts, while another area lets you enjoy art and music. Transparent walls separate the areas, so you can watch each other and discover new interests.”

After the exam, Haruto said quietly to Kanon.
“Your idea wasn’t so bad after all.”

Kanon smiled back.
“I could say what I wanted because you were with me.”

On the day the results were announced, the two opened the envelope together. Inside was the word “Pass.”

“We really are the strongest pair!” Haruto laughed.
Kanon nodded with a gentle smile.
“Yes, from now on too.”
