I grew up in Mountain View. Today the area code there is 650, but it was still part of the 415 when I grew up. I had Huey Lewis’ album 'Sports' on cassette in grade school, and all the little neighborhood kids thought he was the man. I didn't really even have a concept of regional identity at the time as far as local musicians, but Huey Lewis rep'd pretty hard for the Bay, having the 49ers sing backup vocals and things like that.

This album came out right around the time I left the Bay Area to go to school in Southern California. Dan The Automator—who made the beat—is from SF, but even more important to me at the time was that the cuts were by DJ Q-Bert. The Bay Area has an incredible turntablism scene, and I was really gassed that the dude who was one of the undisputed champs was from South Bay.

I saw a couple of the staff members getting slinky when I put on ‘Natural One’ by Folk Implosion, so I figured it was time to get weird. Mike Patton of Faith No More is one of my heroes. From cartoon-inspired death metal to Italian-language soundtrack homages, this dude goes for it every time. Shrieks, wails, growls, no fear. I saw Faith No More with my mom at the Bay Area Music Awards in like 1989, and when presented an award (which was in the shape of a microphone) his acceptance speech was ‘behold the golden dildo.’ Why I still remember that, I don't know.

Shifting focus for the second installment of "Yasiin Gaye", Amerigo aimed to highlight the often overlooked accomplishments of Marvin Gaye's role as the producer.

"I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin's original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context." 
 
Soul Mates Series:

Amerigo Gazaway's *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series' latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled "Yasiin Gaye". Building the album's foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye's Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey's tangled raps and Gaye's soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm "mashup" album.

Bastard Jazz is proud to present the debut EP from Brussels based production duo Eric P & LuiGi aka MonkeyRobot.  Their trademark: exploring the boundaries of soulful music between 90 and 120 bpm. Catching eyes and ears worldwide through their work as 74 Miles Away (Melting Pot Music), and Hip-Hop production under the moniker Infinitskills, alongside radio play from Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Anthony Valadez (KCRW) & Kev Beadle and  Tall Black Guy, who selected their standout “Basement Infusion” track to be on his Tempo Dreams compilation album (released in June on Bastard Jazz), and alliance between the label and M.R. seemed natural.  

Here on their self-titled 12”, MonkeyRobot deliver four diverse tracks that showcase their skills behind the boards, the MPC and the keys, with a keen ear for the dancefloor. Kicking things off, “Brick Stomach” is a synth-heavy four-to-the-floor 120 BPM joint that comes off like a Floating Points visit back in time to 1980’s Detroit with it’s rolling snares, arpeggiating synth bassline  and cloudy pads. Next Up, “Northern Light”  filters shimmering space disco vibes through big, thumping instrumental Hip-Hop drums and moody analog bass.  On the flip, “Rosè Gris” takes things in a funkier direction at 100BPM with it’s syncopated drums, irresistible lead, squelching bassline and all manner of synthesizer explorations.  Rounding off the EP is “Last Days”, which still manages to inject a funky 80’s analog sound into it’s melancholy downtempo vibes.  This is a seriously strong debut from a truly musically talented duo – keep your eyes open for more!
