Okouru - guest mix for MLE on Worldwide FM

There's nothing like being sent into a trance during a DJ set. Head down, eyes closed, no signs of making any bee line for the toilet or the bar, and suddenly hours have passed... That's the effect Stevie Cox has when she's playing.

Originally hailing from Manchester, Stevie has now found herself settled in Glasgow where she's been making a real impact over the last few years. A regular at Sub Club, one of the UK's most heralded clubs, you'll find her propping up the booth alongside fellow residents Harri & Dom and Telford. Last month she was made an official resident and a permanent fixture at the club's Saturday night party Subculture, and for good reason, Stevie's ability to have the crowd hanging on her every move is second to none.

Moving into production was the natural next step for Stevie. Her first official outing sees her team up with London-based producer Fossil Archive, alongside Kiara Scuro's ZaaZaa, for a four-track EP on Hammer's Remmah imprint, plus we hear there's plenty more collabs and her first solo release on the horizon too... 

As you may have gathered, when it comes to hypnotising listeners this isn't Stevie's first rodeo. Over an effortlessly fluid hour of acid, house, techno and garage she shows us exactly why she's a regular fixture at the revered Glasgow institution...

Stevie Cox: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

If we were to pick one word to describe Ziggy Devriendt, AKA Nosedrip, it would probably humble. He runs a one-man empire out of the modest Belgian coastal town of Ostend, and his STROOM label is one of the most quietly brilliant outfits in Western Europe. A mixture of obscurer-than-obscure reissues and quirky new material makes for a label as unpredictable as it is essential, and Devriendt's unusual touch is all over it—he prefers to make up his own compilations and sequences instead of just repackaging old records, for example, which explains how important curation and putting songs together is to him.

So it's not a surprise that , in addition to being a music nerd supreme, Devriendt is also a remarkably good DJ, whose ear for oddball cuts translates well into intuitively danceable music. Judging from his RA Podcast, he's had trance on the mind—the mix features flighty beats that range from CJ Bolland and Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia to new-school practitioners like J-Zbel, plus a major highlight from Peter Van Hoesen that you might remember from Marcel Fengler's Berghain 05 mix and plenty of new material from Stroom. (He's also putting out a compilation of Belgian trance, which might explain the direction of this mix.) It's a three hour-ride that varies from jaw-dropping mixing to abrupt, almost shocking transitions that might startle you out of your chair.

Laani (@alanna-henry) is all about introducing you to music you love but don't yet know it. It’s the Londoner’s exceptional taste in all things jazz and Afro, soul and hip hop which makes that so. She demonstrates it with her regular The FullJoy Experience shows on Worldwide.fm and her work with Strut Records, but this week she heads into a different world of sound. 

House, acid and breaks are the order of the day here with cuts from the likes of Lady Blacktronika, Paula Tape, Soichi Terada and K-Lone all making for a lively selection. There is a classical leaning to start with as lush synth soul permeates the good-time grooves. Celebratory piano chords, peak time house and deeper moments all reflect the sound of a DJ able to play loose, free and with an irresistible sense of fun.

Raised in South-East London, relocating to Bath since(spending days between there and Berlin) Niks Delanancy aka NIKS has become one of the prominent names in the UK club scene today. She is also the founder of Black Artist Data base which is the platform she created to promote Black Artists around the world. Now working on the next stage of B.A.D.’s evolution. The label will be launching to accompany the existing platform, releasing music that aligns with its mission. NIKS will be managing the label as well as acting as A&R. Being raised with a father who was a guitarist in a band and her brother who was an avid music collector in the heyday of London’s garage movement, NIKS has been surrounded with a musical ear all of her life. With an ear that touches from classic deep house to the driving percussive UK stylings of Hessle Audio it doesn't take long to figure out how NIKS' diverse pallet has seen her play clubs all over the world and helped the artist bag a nomination for "Breakthrough DJ of the year" at the Mixmag awards last year as well as seen her knock out mixes for Resident Advisor and The Warehouse Project to name but a few, it's this diversity we see in this club ready mix for Phonica 105.
