One-half of the live electronics duo Punky & The Brain, Paul Lution has been pogoing about our scene with a dastardly plan with renewed energy these past few years. Part of the Outcast Torino family, his live sets have been well received across the board, especially at the likes of VBX, Cafe Croissant, Red58, and of course, Outcast Torino. With his signature clear sunglasses and bass guitar strapped to his side, Paul cuts back his performances to the bear essential elements in order to deliver maximum dancefloor impact. 

His offering for our InSession series is the perfect snapshot of just why he is in so high demand right now. Squelchy basslines, ravey stabs and succinct transitions ensure that he maintains the energy levels throughout the 1-hour live set. With a tongue-in-cheek humour that is not often afforded to live performances, whether he is in solo mode or donning his white lab coat as part of Punk & The Brain, there will always be some new and exciting coming from the booth when Paul Lution is doing his thing.

By now, OTIS and Paul Lution should be well-known names, and perhaps if you have not caught them performing in solo mode or collectively, then you will have undoubtedly caught some of their studio output in recent months. Being part of the Outcast Torino extended family, both artists have been in high demand and with their powerful audio creations speaking volumes at the moment this is surely only going to grow and grow. Collectively, this duo combine their love of electronics, dancefloor knowledge and even instruments to form an outrageous live act called Punky and The Brain. Perhaps the 90s cartoon reference may be lost on some, their madcap sets fuse electric guitar, live synths, and vocoded vocals into something akin to a rock performance rather than an electro pairing.

For those that do remember the cartoon from the mid 90s, the opening track from their InSessions recording is a timely reminder before they launch into the main section of their set. With their sound sitting in the sweet spot between Italo, nu school electro, acid, and breaks OTIS and Paul quickly move the gears in order to present their full spectrum in quick succession. With the pair performing in safety specs and white lab coats there is a clear case of style and substance, not just one over the other.

Part of the Outcast Torino crew, Munir Nadir has for some time like his crew members been making moves outside of the Italian collective. This includes his booking schedule outside of the infamous Outcast parties exploding in recent years. Taking him far and wide, Munir has grown to become a well respected selector capable of destroying dancefloors from Bar.Temp in Bangkok to Dias De Campo in Montanejos. This reputation has been further enhanced by the arrival of his own label Odd One Tape, a vehicle for his own productions. As you might expect, these sell out almost as soon as they arrive in stock.


After a brief but thoroughly wonky introlude, Munir quickly sets about setting up one of his trademark stripped back grooves. Irresistible from the get go, his brand of high octane club tools never let the energy levels dip below boiling point for long. So much so, that it is not until nearly a quarter way through the mix that anything resembling a breakdown appears. Built for the peak hours, Munir melds alien soundscapes with robust drums and out of this world basslines. Slowly but surely raising the temperature throughout the hour run time, Munir’s brand of muscular house and percussive techno coloured with acid and Italo influences hits the spot.
