The song ‘Lie Down In Darkness’ is named after a William Styron book, and the song, at least for me is a very emotional, sort of mournful, piece of symphonic, electronic music, my friend Joy Malcolm sings on it. 

Right before he died I got to hear William Styron speak at a Paris review dinner, he read from Lie Down In Darkness, I was watching him read and it was beautiful and emotional. I remember looking around to see if anyone else was having the same reaction I was having, and I looked around and it was all this jaded, cynical New Yorkers who were checking their blackberries or their iphones, and not paying attention. It made me so disappointed. I was thinking, here is William Styron, who is this remarkable writer and he is sort of bearing his soul and you could tell he didn’t have much longer to live and most of the people were not paying attention. But I feel really fortunate that I got to see him and meet him right before he died.


Lie Down In Darkness

Lacrimae is where my sense of history falls apart. I should have memorized the scene that I named it after. 

There is this a Latin quote which is ‘Lacrimae Rerum’ and it means ‘the tears of the world’. I am going to speak in generalization because if I try to be specific I’ll make a fool of myself. I think it is in the Aeneid, a warrior or someone was looking at a painting of a scene of a great battle and he was filled with pity and compassion for humanity, for the fact that humans live in this state of constant struggle and sadness. 

So the expression ‘Lacrimae Rerum’ means tears for human suffering. Tears as in appropriate reaction to the human condition. I just like the title, and I think there is a Finnish goth band who are called Lacrimae Rerum as well. So me and the dark Finns, we like the title. 

One of my favourite guitar player is Tom Verlaine from Television, and my entire life I’ve been trying to sort of play electric guitar like Tom Verlaine. And so this one, I think I was playing the riff from ‘Marquee Moon’ and then I was sort of playing around and I recorded a little guitar riff and looped it, and then was almost an effort to add musical compositional elements that didn’t fit. So adding sync parts that didn’t fit, adding drums that didn’t fit, and to try to take a whole bunch of slightly awkward, ill placed elements and craft something cohesive from them and that was the idea from the song. 

Again, I’m not allowed to pick favourites, but it’s probably my second favourite song on the record because where it starts and where it ends up are so different. When I listen to the opening of it, it just sounds odd, melodic and winsome and then by the middle it’s this male strum and then it ends quiet and winsome again.

After releasing their critically acclaimed debut album “Beyond”, Kyoto-based Marihiko Hara and Polar M (Masumi Muranaka) have embarked on a series of live performance around Asia region, including Korea, Malaysia and many places in Japan. Each time they performed together, the sense of how their individual sounds complement each other grew stronger. And with these live performances, their interweaving sounds have underwent subtle refinement – they become even more profound and exquisite, and far more interconnected.

While touring, the duo was also actively collaborating with dance choreographers. In early 2016, the duo was again commissioned to compose new pieces for a dance performance. It was during that time, their brand new 2nd album “Dance”, was conceived.

Through their interactions with the talented dancers across Asia, these two very gifted musicians started to explore the meanings of “dance”. Gradually, they have come to realised that, everything in our daily life can be regarded as “dance” – the rhythm of the changing seasons, the subtle movement of time, the weight of words, the shifting of emotion, the cycle of life, all parts that form our lives, are indeed in themselves – a “dance”. And in this gorgeous new album, using their ever delicate sounds, the duo graciously illustrated this aesthetic interpretation of “dance”.

Musically, the duo picked up where they left off in their very successful debut album - traces of refined post-classical, melodic folktronica, floating ambient, and glimpses of jazz, continued to be found in this 2nd album. What is more apparent in this new album is that the guitars had taken a more prominent role. As such, the sound textures and melody movements have become much richer and more diverse, which impeccably reflect the refinement that underwent for the musical style of Marihiko and Masumi.

The duo’s good friend, Mia Cabalfin - a renowned contemporary dancer from Philippines, who lent her wonderful voice in the debut album, continued to feature in this album by performing the hauntingly beautiful spoken words in the album title track. This album is tastefully mastered by Tokyo’s renowned musician and sound engineer, Chihei Hatakeyama, and features photo by Ken Furudate, and design by Seitaro Nishioka. In addition, the artist management for the duo is supported by the excellent people from Kyoto’s label and event organiser NightCruising.

◆『invisible flickers』アルバム紹介

神々しい音の波がそっと舞い降り、深く心地良い空間へと導く。

現代音楽とアンデス音楽を演奏するギタリストとして世界各地で演奏するほか《秩父前衛派》として音楽以外に現代美術や映画制作など多岐に渡る活動を続けるShin Sasakubo（笹久保 伸）と、デジタル音響処理に精通した作曲家Akiyuki Okayasu（岡安 啓幸）による、美しいギターと繊細なエレクトロニクスに深く淡い音世界を纏わせた極上のアンビエンス・アルバム。

叙情性に重きを置いたという本作は、明かりのゆらめきであったり、グラデーションといった映像感もイメージした上で、目に見えない「フリッカー（明かりの明滅、ゆらめくもの）」というテーマを基軸に、永遠に続く新鮮な響きによって様々な情景が描かれた作品となった。

制作手法に関する岡安 啓幸のコメント
「制作の最初にギターの即興を録音しました。ギターの音、音楽はすでに独自のものでした。変則的な調弦やギターにプリパレーションを施したことも関係しますが、特殊な技法以上にそもそもの演奏の力が歴然としていてコントロールルームで興奮して聴いていました。その即興演奏のデータをあるときは独自のプログラムによって加工し、あるときは編集と再構成を重ねることで私たちの音楽は生み出されています。」

笹久保 伸

現代音楽とアンデス音楽を演奏するギタリストとしてイタリア、ギリシャ、ブルガリア、キューバ、アルゼンチン、チリ、ボリビア、ペルーでソロ公演。

2004年～2007年、ペルーに在住しアンデスの農村で音楽を採集調査しながら演奏活動をおこない、ペルーでは13枚のCDをリリース。
2008年、来日中のペルー大統領への演奏会（在日ペルー大使館主催）。
2008年頃より郷土をテーマとしたアート運動『秩父前衛派』を始め、音楽、映画、美術、演劇、写真、文筆、講演など様々な文脈で活動。秩父前衛派名義で8ミリフィルム映画を3作品発表。
2015年山形国際ドキュメンタリー映画祭にて映画「PYRAMID～破壊の記憶の走馬灯」上映。
2016年までにCD25枚をペルーと日本のレーベル各社からリリース。

またアンデス音楽やアートについて早稲田大学、多摩美術大学、京都外国語大学、東京医科歯科大学などで特別講義をおこなうなど、演奏以外に講義活動もおこなう。

現代の作曲家と交流を持ち、高橋悠治、Sylvano Bussotti、Carlo Domeniconi、杉山洋一らの新作を初演。

岡安 啓幸

1993年に埼玉県に生まれる。中学生の頃からギターの演奏と作曲を始める。
高校卒業後、一年間浪人し、国立音楽大学音楽文化デザイン学科に入学。コンピュータ音楽を今井慎太郎に、作曲を神本真理に師事する。
2016年3月に国立音楽大学を中退し、山本製作所開発部に入社、プログラマー/音楽家として電子楽器の開発、サウンドシステムの開発などを行う。
DSPの専門家でもあり、自作のためのVSTプラグインの開発も行う。
独自のプログラムから生成されるノイズ、ドローンは、暴力的な要素を持ちながらも静謐さを併せ持つ。
現代音楽、ドローン、ロウアーケースサウンドの要素をそれぞれ持ちながらも、そのどちらでもないボーダーレスな音楽を目指す。
