This song is a-lot to process… it is the beginning of my long nightmare…Originally called “August’s Nightmare”, this song is the foundation of me learning to control my BPD because one day everything is gone… COVID took my mother too soon in her sleep… i was destroyed because the last interaction i had with my mother was a negative one. She was just trying to be a mother after she saw her son crying for a boy that he was there for since he was born she was just trying to help so she did what any other mother would do with their child. Try to make him feel better… well my mom tend to have a bad habit habit of not just being quiet. I yelled at my mom for putting her nose in business. She shouldn’t have… Two weeks later she’s gone. The email is a genuine email from my mother and the laughter is the boy I was talking about. I hope y’all enjoy this isn’t the original that I was going to post but my iCloud is locked out right now. I will post the other cover soon.. thank you for listening.

With seemingly effortless precision and a sense for the imperfect, Popp merges Ambient, Third Stream and Minimal Music on his debut album „Laya“. The title derives from the Sanskrit language and signifies a place of rest and mental inactivity. In the spring of 2019 Popp created these 8 tracks from hours of improvisation in his own studio. The moments thus captured were then enriched with more sounds and effects to add layers and shed the manually played percussion of all its earthliness. The result is an album of concealed complexity and unadorned beauty. 

Raised on an old farm in rural Bavaria, Simon Popp started playing the drums at the age of 9. During his studies at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich, he extensively studied music from countries like Ghana, Benin, India and Cuba where rhythm is central to culture. On his quest for this world‘s sounds, Popp collected and recorded a wide variety of drums and other instruments, adding to the placelessness of Laya.
