Igor Stravinsky's Sacre du Printemps celebrates it's 100th birthday tomorrow.
 
The riotous premiere of The Rite of Spring by the Ballets Russes on 29 May 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris, is legendary. Utimately it was the music's rhythmic structure that seemed most shocking. Expanding on procedures he had first explored in Petrushka, Stravinsky artfully contrives to keep the listener off-balance rhythmically by frequently changing meter and by indicating heavy accents that seem random (though carefully calculated). Nijinsky's ballet choreography closely reflected these rhythms with frequent jumps and spastic contortions.

To celebrate the Sacre's 100th birthday, I took a sample of the Sacre's end: an orchestral 'tutti' (lasting about 2 seconds) and stretched it 100 times to 2 x 100 = 200 seconds = 3'20''.
