Vier jaar geleden besloot correspondent Thalia Verkade zich vast te bijten in de toekomst van ons verkeer. Ze raakte al snel gefascineerd door de nieuwste ontwikkelingen, van elektrische auto's tot speed pedelecs, van deelfietsen tot slimme verkeerslichten. En dan had je ook nog de belofte van zelfrijdende auto's, drones die pakketjes afleveren en raketten naar Mars. De toekomst leek glanzend, hypermodern en ronduit opwindend. 

Maar toen sprak Thalia met Marco de fietsprofessor. 

Marco te Brömmelstroet is hoogleraar Toekomsten van Stedelijke Mobiliteit. Toen Thalia hem enthousiast vertelde dat ze aan het uitzoeken was wat er nodig is om Nederland klaar te maken voor een heel netwerk aan fietssnelwegen, keek hij haar zwijgend aan. Waarom zou je dat willen, vroeg hij. Waarom zouden fietsers zo snel mogelijk op hun werk moeten komen? Gaat het in het verkeer echt alleen over de vraag hoe je zo snel mogelijk van A naar B komt? Of zijn er ook nog andere dingen belangrijk? 

Het ongemakkelijke gesprek dat volgde werd de basis van een boek dat Thalia en Marco samen zouden schrijven. Een boek dat je leert om helemaal anders naar het verkeer te kijken. Van het zogenoemde 'fileprobleem' tot de honderden verkeersslachtoffers die ieder jaar weer vallen. Thalia en Marco vertellen over de impact die het boek heeft gehad in het veld van verkeerskundigen, Jesse heeft een paar kritische kanttekeningen, en Rutger vraagt zich af of hij – als inwoner van een voorstad met een auto voor de deur – ook een onderdeel is van het probleem.

Excerpts of the sound design for Solastalgia, a film by Eline Kersten.
Solastalgia is about the ENCI quarry in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The film explores the relation of the ENCI quarry and factory with its environment, the history and the impact on its surroundings and local community. For this project I worked on the sound design and provided technical assistance. Together with Eline I made on-site field-recordings at the ENCI quarry, the factory and the caves.

The Australian eco philosopher Glenn Albrecht refers with the term solastalgia to the relation between environmental degradation and the mental wellbeing of the people living and working in the degraded area. The eponymous film ‘Solastalgia’ shows the transformation of a limestone quarry from industry to nature area, and captures what influence this change has on the wellbeing of its users. It shows the many different users of this area and their interests; from former employees of the factory to the sheepherder who is dealing with the vegetation of the area, from the local protest group to someone who wanders illegally in the underground tunnel system. The film shows the multi layeredness of a quarry and how one place can carry many different stories.
