Quickly explained, Shan Zhai is a term used to name all bootleg Chinese products, like counterfeit iPhones, pirate Adidas clothes, even appearances of fake celebrities. We are getting deeper into the new millennia, and each step further into it, intelligent mock-up, conscious imitation, straight up copy and paste are becoming the new modes of glorified creation, which were once considered non-creative, coward, lazy at best. The copywrite laws have still to catch up.  In all arts and fashion we see this tendency to merge one brand into another, digital collages in every corner and every instagram feed, heavy electronic beats supporting an ancient melody.  In music, this kind of creativity is mostly exploited through the art of sampling. Taking an external sound, it may even be a whole song, and chop it up into a piano roll or a pad controller, modifying it to get a whole new instrument. Is it because all melodies have been sung, all harmonies been played, all rhythms been explored? It may be the answer. I deeply feel that innovation and creativity in this age are mostly defined by sound-shaping, rather than looking for another chord, melody lick or new rhythm. Is it still even possible? For me Shan Zhai defines this state of culture in which we copy, chop, paste, erase, rewrite, and that’s what’s valued as creativity. This beat-tape is all about this kind of creative process. For the first time, I’ve made an album completely out vinyl samples. Revisiting classic beat-making techniques, I’m releasing this Boombap beat-tape to honor Hip-Hop’s golden era.  It was an amazing adventure working with wax, because despite its dirtiness and sonic flaws, it has a warmth that is rare in digital recordings. In this opus I decided to keep it simple: drums where chopped from vinyl and replayed on the drum pads, as for the main samples. I did add basses played either on my fretless bass or on analogue synth samples. Instead of adding  other instruments, I created dynamism by playing around with the sample, reversing it, re-chopping it, reinterpreting it all along the arrangement. 
Tripura is the main goddess in the Dasha Mahavidyas, a South Indian tantric tradition. Tri means three, and Pura, cities. These three cities represent our three states of consciousness: wake, dream and deep sleep.  She is warmth and beauty, and I felt I was guided by these principles all along the creation of this beat-tape.

Prpl Trtl is candy trap. It’s basically trap drums with sugar and candy over it. I layered syncopated dancing hihats, snappy snares,  disrespectful kicks and almost too heavy 808 basses. Over it, in Salt Bae’s fashion, I sprinkled some  jazz chords, kitch synth sounds, and vocal chops that remind us off electronic music drops. Contrary to my other Beat tapes that are unquantized, gritty and boombap driven, this one is pop, clear, clean and quantized to the grid. I wanted to play with different sound and a different way to make music.
