preface: in all fairness, it is important for people to observe and recognize the long-standing collective mind of blood- and sweat- driven mom & pop record shops, starving musicians, working djs, dancefloor junkies, indie labels, broadcast outlets and wholesale distributors that got house and techno musics — which are in attempt to be marginalized by the term 'edm', similarly by the term 'electronica' — to where they are today. these business synergies were vital and elemental to their existence and have since been trivialized — in a comically short amount of time — by the digital marketplace that has come to be. the great, diligent, tireless work of these people can be affirmed by seeking out the original copies of this music on vinyl or cassette and sustaining culture within humanity that embraces the purity of the actual playback, studio and recording methods and equipment originally employed to make these sounds, recordings and experiences possible, without a solitary reference to any later technology whatsoever. just as we cannot unlearn this newer technology, as such, it is important to note that these recordings are from the days when everyone had to beatmatch records. a trainwreck could ruin a party, the heat was on.

it was a much simpler time. music was more innocent as our sound emerged from the fun-loving exploration of groovy music and the possibility of spiritual midi with attitude. positive, forward thinking vibes all around. dedicated individuals on dancefloors! no reason. no ableton. no fruity loops. no laptops. digital audio recording and cd burning were elusive cool things to which only certain people had access. no internets. no google. no facebook. no tweeting. no soundcloud. no smartphones. no direct to disk digital download. no cd burning. no flash drives. no sync button. no digital dj mothership. just a radio (one was lucky enough to be tuned to the hip station, grabbing the nearest tape and hitting record), playing all this great new music coming from truly inspired producers — working/living in studios entirely sure to be filled with gear of some sort, semi-sophisticated recording equipment, actual outboard gear for all compression+fx and cables everywhere. ( new listeners were none the wiser, then! only thoughts for the listener were wtf, how did they? wow, cool! more please! ) finally, bringing the magic to the people, a dedicated selector, the dj, using impeccable skill to make magic with two decks (or more), needles on records, a mixer and speakers... all people had to do this back then was gear, warm analog signals and imagination! and shipments by which new music was made available in cardboard boxes marked 'heavy' like clockwork every wednesday. and funky, obscure magazines that clued people in to the latest unknown factoid on the goods. oh yeah, and pagers. and the nearest landline or payphone to be used for returning those "411" pages. keep it real. keep making mix tapes. they are our roots, they sound pretty good and have two sides to tell a whole story!
