One day, a tiger caught a fox and was about to eat it.
But the fox looked at him calmly and said:
“How dare you try to eat me? Don’t you know I was sent by Heaven to rule over all the animals?”
The tiger laughed. “You? A fox? Rule the animals?”
The fox replied:
“If you don’t believe me, walk with me through the forest. You’ll see how every animal runs away when they see me. But remember they flee from me, not from you.”
Curious, the tiger agreed.
They walked together through the forest
And indeed every animal they passed fled in fear.
The tiger was amazed. He didn’t realize it was his own presence that frightened the animals not the fox.The fox, clever and composed, continued walking proudly ahead, basking in a borrowed authority.
