"While curating this set, I thought about how our human experiences often feel unstable, lonely, and painful, yielding our deep need for connection. This set is a meditation on how our artistic and creative practices of all kinds have the power to generate and co-manifest collective strength, and how crucial this work together is for all of us. The musical selections, for me, give rise to feelings of love, sensuality, mystery, whimsy, queerness, wonder – and a little fear too. The process of building this set was hugely formative for me; it took me quite a while to get the flow right and find a take that seemed to capture where I am at right now. A huge thank you to you for taking the time to listen, for Distant Signals for generating community around this series, and to all of the mind-blowing producers included below. I hope you enjoy xx"

Eric Umble (he/they) is a Brooklyn-based DJ, sound artist, clarinetist, and party producer passionate about cultivating a thriving local dance music community. An acclaimed classical musician with a focus on experimental music, Eric's love of repetition and extended forms made his jump to DJing a natural step. 

Eric is co-founder, lead producer, and resident of FACETIME along with Rebecca Goldberg (Detroit Underground). Founded in 2019, FACETIME builds and celebrates community through music, dance, and visual art. It is held monthly in New York City and has also presented after-hours, virtual, and late-night events in Detroit and Cleveland. Eric is a regular presence in the New York scene appearing at venues including Bossa Nova Civic Club, Trans-Peocs, Mansions, Market Hotel, H0l0, National Sawdust, and more. Eric has shared their driving, hypnotic, uplifting, melodic, and groovy sound across the country at parties and raves above and below ground. Highlights include VOID (Philadelphia), Intimät (Denver), SYIT's Techno Cabin (NYC / PA), and Sound Space (Deluxx Fluxx, Detroit). Eric joined the inaugural artist roster of the Verdant Foundry in 2023.

For mix number 20 in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from Portland's @othr_wrld

othrwrld is a trans femme DJ, producer, and self proclaimed "aural apothecary" using sound and atmosphere to open portals into new utopian possibilities for trans posthuman club creatures to experience collective immanence and healing.  Equally likely to find her sweating behind the decks at a late night warehouse rave enshrouded in fog, or sitting peacefully weaving textures in a dimly lit chillroom, othrwrld sits on the cutting edge of trans futuristic music from hypnotic/chaotic psytechno, bass, and ritualistic rhythms to slambient mind journeys, soundbaths and deep dubbed out dancefloors.  

othrwrld has lived in Portland Oregon for the past 6 years and has cultivated a strong relationship with the local nightlife/dance music community, while always pledged to prioritizing the queer underground.  In 2023 she started her own party/mix series "Club Liminal" a left field ethereal techno party for trans ravers and all who yearn to rave on the edge of reality.

Mix description: 
This mix was recorded in my home studio towards the tail end of a very overwhelming period of life where I was attempting to find both solid footing as well as expansion.  As tends to be my style I think this mix will ferry the listener on a well guided journey through realms both introspective as well as expansive, this time maybe trending more towards the melancholy, with a hint of dissociation.  I guess I was tapping into the experience of exhaustion I was having, and needing to give myself some space to rest and to just feel what I was feeling without any urgency to “solve” what I was going through.  The mix rides gentle waves rolling waves of energy, always with a strong gravitational pull towards the earth, towards center, a prayer for inner peace.  If you’ve caught me playing live anytime over the past month chances are you’ve heard at least one or two of these tracks woven into a set, including originals from my upcoming release with PPRZ.  I can’t wait for these songs to be out in the world and I’m honored to debut them in this context alongside lots of music I admire / am inspired by.

In the general context we are all facing right now, we thought it could be helpful to try and stand still for a moment with our emotions and try let them sink in. Today, we welcome mx.pinky into our mixtapes collection and we couldn’t be more honoured to receive a piece so incredibly vulnerable and honest. A deep and fearful feeling we probably all sense strongly at the moment. She sent us some words to go with that mixtapes that we wanted to share with you before you dive into her emotional musical journey: 

“Sadness, anger and grief - emotions felt during the creation of this mix. I’ve struggled to process these feelings - will they ever change? It feels like a recurring state that I’ve learned to lean into, to utilise creatively. I put this mix together in the midst of a depressive episode. Working on it, and on the track “Compromises To Try” with Ruin Klarity, brought me warmth and pushed me, healed me. This mix is an hommage to my love for rock music and dark wave of my youth, mixed with more recent electronic music. Playing it back on a walk, it held me safe and gave me strength to face the streets.”
