Gambit preview

Deutschlandlied was written by Joseph Haydn in 1797 for the poem Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, and was later used for the German National Anthem. The tune is also used for the hymn Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken. 

Thaxted was written by English composer Gusav Holst, and was adapted from the theme from Jupiter from Holst's Planets Suite. The tune is used for many hymns, most famously O God Beyond All Praising, and was included in Vaughan Williams's 1926 book Songs of Praise. The tune is perhaps most famously known as the melody for the patriotic song I Vow to Thee, My Country. 

I play both tunes because I think they are wonderful melodies, not because I believe in either God, nor nationalism. 

Deutschlandlied/Thaxted

An 18th century dance tune, written by Nathaniel Kynaston. I learnt this from the playing of Boldwood. 

Played on my D/G Hohner Erika.

First new tune that I've written in what seems far too long. Dedicated to our dodgy boiler.

Cold Start

Traveller's Joy/Mrs Foster's Fudge

Haste to the Wedding from the Cotswold village of Adderbury. Technically the tune is called Rory O'Moore. Recorded for the melodeon.net Tune of the Month Jan 2015. Excuse the mistakes, still getting to grips with this concertina.

A little sound sample of the harmonium I received today! It's an H. Christophe & Etienne instrument with 7 stops, made in Paris in the latter half of the 19th century. Currently tuned in old philharmonic pitch, which is around A 452. 

The tune is called Napoleon, and I learnt it from the playing of the Finnish duo Zwei Mannborgs. 

Apologies for the dodgy playing, I've not played a keyboard instrument for a few years!

Harmonium

A quick tune on my wonderful new CF 12 bass Hohner Erika, which I've just received from the excellent Mike Rowbotham. I'm very much enjoying playing it! 

The tune is a march called Napoleon, which I learnt from a Finnish harmonium duo called Zwei Manneborgs.

I was noodling around, and this polka appeared. I might have nicked bits from places, does anyone recognise it?

The Wandsworth Polka

This tune started life as an 16 bar Playford tune (the first tune in the first edition). I've tacked on a few bars here and there, and used an alternative few bars from the original manuscript to make it a stand 32 bar jig. Probably considerably less Saraband-ey now, but I'm sure Adson won't mind.

Only Remembered

A schottische that I wrote this afternoon, so called because my final A level exam is on Friday. Played on a Hohner GC melodeon.

A tune written and recorded on the eastern cliff over looking the beautiful Cornish village on Polperro.

A fiendish little tune written this evening, after stubbing my left big toe rather badly whilst falling up the back step (smooth, I know...). A mixture of 5/4 and 7/4 - dots available on request. Note to self, don't write tunes you can't really play...

The Big Toe

The same tune, but this time played differently. Everything has been shifted half a bar forwards, thus completely changing the emphasis of the tune. This has to be one of the most versatile tunes I know. Written by Jim Harding of South Downs Morris.

The first tune I've written on my new Loffet Pro GC. So named because the room in which it was written is red.

Played on a Hohner 1-row 4-stop in D. Still getting my fingers round it, as it's a very different experience to a two row, but I'm getting there, and it's great fun!
