05 DJ Hazard & D Minds - Mr Happy

As a prelude to the upcoming Soul:ution Room Two takeover on Friday 16th May, label boss Marcus Intalex and one of Manchester’s most reliable renegade emcees, DRS, have bumped consciousness and put together this, their ‘Mid Mic Crisis’ mix. Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Basically it’s a glorious and specifically tailored 62 minute mixtape showcase of DRS’ potency as a host, an emcee and a vocalist. But it comes mixed by Intalex which more than hints at the level of quality it contains... two of Manchester's finest in sterling form.

The Ulterior Motive duo may have become something of a welcome fixture at FABRICLIVE over the last few years but please, rest assured, that comment is not supposed to come across like we're sat here, resting on their laurels or relying on them time and time again to hold down a peak time dancefloor (the fact that they're repeatedly shown themselves to be adept at exactly that does bear repeating though). It's more their tunes/mixes/sets and general contributions to drum & bass as an entity that we find such a constant winner. Take this 30 minute promo mix, made ahead of the lads' upcoming appearance in Room Two at the annual Playaz Easter Special on Friday 27th March: yes, it's a telltale mixture of stark, rolling rhythms with lashings of testing low end but it's also got oodles of interesting snares, contorted and confusing drum fills, agitated vocal samples, swelling background tones and what one assumes is a VIP mix of DRS' omnipresent 'Count To Ten.' It's overpoweringly obvious that it's been put together by hands that respect and love the music and the platform. 

So, it goes without saying, if your a fan of drum & bass, you should download and enjoy this. Just make sure you don't miss them here at the end of the month.

Momentum - Calibre - The Retrospective Mix 2015

Today we’re lucky enough to be premiering what someone in the office just referred to as a ‘serious nugget.’ Yeah, OK, so that person was me. And yes, I did say it to myself, in my head, after listening to it over and over again; but the fact remains and it is what it is. The Critical Music signed drum & bass producer, Emperor’s'She Said VIP’ – which will be exclusively available from the Critical store this Monday – is superlatively frenetic, heaving it’s way out of the rousing build up introduction with the sort of lurching industrial bassline that’ll set most dancefloors afire. The full Into Black EP will be released on vinyl and digital this coming Monday, but we’re toasting the publication of the EP’s pre-order link here today because it ties in nicely with the fact that we recently announced the next Critical Sound date (10th July) where you’ll be able to witness Emperor going B2B with The Upbeats.

Emperor - Mind Games

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. This year's been a prolific one for Bristol producer Break. He's released the 'Murmur VIP' with Octane, the '40 Hurts' EP on Gutterfunk, 'Strictly Entertainment'/'Dulcit Tones' on Playaz and put out 'Symmetry Sessions 2' on Symmetry. 

He won't be sitting back and thinking that's enough for the year though, as third album 'Simpler Times' is due to arrive in September, adding to a decade-long list of releases on Metalheadz, Ram, Dispatch and Critical Recordings.

For the opening set of the night we had label manager Ant TC1 warming up early doors ahead of Doc Scott and Goldie, here's the first of the 3 recordings that we are uploading from this memorable mid-summer event.  It was a special night in June of this year with a sold out crowd of 800+ people crammed into Xoyo's upstairs room (from pretty much before the very first needle was placed on the record until going past the nights extended close).  Again a big thanks to Benji B for inviting us down to take over the room.
