It mixes nostalgic, joyful melodies with moments of melancholy, backed with punchy, broken beats that shift into a house groove for the final drop.

In this installment of Sound Advice, we’re joined by Bicep, the Belfast-born, London-based duo whose deft blend of house, trance and breaks have made them some of the UK’s most acclaimed live electronic performers. After two albums on the Ninja Tune label — 2017’s self-titled and 2021’s ‘Isles’ — and years of touring, they’re now back in their studio, working on their club-focused ‘CHROMA’ series and forthcoming album. We caught up with Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson from their studio to discuss their genre-agnostic influences, their musical evolution as Bicep, the creative challenges of having a digital and analog studio, and how they’ve used SoundCloud to grow as artists.

Premiere: Olly Pitcher - New Track - Reckless Romantic Records

Babysteps is my reminder that great things take time. Some tracks take me just one afternoon and feel complete as they are, while others take months of exploration and refinement. Babysteps is a perfect example of the latter.

The first idea for this track was born during a four-hour studio session I booked in Berlin. From there, it became a journey that unfolded in countless places and situations. I worked on it right after quitting my day job, during long scenic train rides through Germany, and in quiet moments—sometimes a few hours in the morning, sometimes late into the evening. Months passed, but it felt like it's coming together, piece by piece.

What stood out to me was how many times I revisited this project—all versions I created, pushed it just a tiny step forward. Slowly but surely, the track fell into place, evolving step by step. And that’s what Babysteps is all about.

New studio mix for you. I modeled this after my open-to-close sets where I start ambient and build. I’ve posted live mixes lately which have spontaneity, so it was nice to carefully craft a studio mix with intentionality. Let me know if I should drop any of these new tracks… ;)
