LUGH announces debut EP ‘Hélico’ to be released via label and platform @c-a-n-v-a-s on summer solstice, 21st June 2018.

The Berlin-based artist makes use of digitally disembodied vocal sounds and textures as a compositional tool for creating new environments on Hélico, in attempt to draw his listener into an affected and emotive state. However, LUGH strives to leave the listener short of creating a true connection to the source of the sound. The outcome is a very real and tangible experience that is somehow lost in an uncanny virtual space.

The opening track, ‘Million Dollar Cowboy’ revs up this specific depiction to its utmost resulting in an eerie and evocative space formed by the overlap of what is recognizably human, tangible and familiar with the aseptic sterility of the digital. This is followed by the rupturing of ‘Teeth in My Hands’ clearing the air for a new environment to be created, by the third track, ‘Skototrope’.

‘Skototrope’ is about the self-realisation and acknowledgement of a certain attraction to somehow somber and negative realities. The track portrays the delicate tension between feelings of disappointment and defeat and the tender affection for those negative aspects, which one continues to cherish and explore.

Introducing LUGH’s disembodied and distorted voice on ‘Moan Jiro’, the track disrupts his reflective state with a raw burst of energy and the only conventional rhythmic moment on ‘Hélico’. The same distorted voice navigates a somehow cosmic space on ‘No Tassels’. Closing track, ‘Tropics’, creates a narrative “like a micro-opera for the themes and characters encountered along the release”.

After having previously existed as a showcase where LUGH had performed and collaborated with other London based artists, C.A.N.V.A.S has morphed into a platform for the coexistence of a geographically increasingly disparate group of artists, manifested through events held in London, Berlin and Ireland.

Nicholas Zhu’s previous efforts as bod [包家巷] saw them folding context both online and off into palpable concepts like MoVA (Museum of Virtual Art) as well as sound pieces Advent of the Silicon Rain [硅雨来临] and Limpid Fear [清澈恐惧], released through Quantum Natives and KNIVES, respectively. Zhu’s music is primarily constructed through piano and voice, “performed” through active manipulation of a MIDI instruments and vocal recordings overlaid and situated in field recordings and soundtrack rips. The resulting world created reads as documentations or meta-considerations of the present moment, measurements of the experience of life through technologically informed sound design.

The latest bod [包家巷] work, entitled The Recurrence Of Infections [复发感染], is an elliptically sweet yet unsettling audio piece that conceptualizes a state of mind in “the quiet hours of laborious coping that fall into the areas between work and sleep.” It comes with additional sound and video supplements that "are components of the larger, continuous work that is living." The title refers to a series of health issues that they had while living in Los Angeles.

Zhu has stated in previous interviews that their practice in music is distinct from their art, citing “socioeconomic precarity” as a driving force behind their work. “I put my studio practice on hold specifically to work on music (for efficacy, music allows me to engage with people in a way that art can’t) knowing that meaning doesn’t translate, even when literally transcribed.”

The spacious desolation and emotional surges that are felt in the sound piece aren’t intended to impart meaning as much as expressing an affect, specifically attuned to the darker moments in one’s life when they are self-loathing, lost in unease and intense fear. The work varies from calm and polymorphous soundscapes to maximal onslaughts of noise and harmonies, each section stitched to the next as nonlinear, anecdotal chapters in a story of personal experience.

Toiret Status is Isamu Yorichika from Yamaguchi, Japan. His new work Otohime is his first vinyl record and his second album on Orange Milk following ◎omaru◎ in 2016. Otohime includes collaborations with Co La, and Yoshitaka Hikawa. He has also released music on the labels Noumenal Loom, Plus 100 Records, Pedicure Records, Wasabi Tapes, and Slagwerk.

Isamu began making music as a drummer for noise and hardcore bands which led to his first solo recordings in 2015. As Toiret Status he has said that he wants to create work resembling the idea of food going through digestion, excretion, and then flushing. This cycle is like the regurgitation of sounds sampled from his daily life: movies, video games, and field recordings. The sources are digested and then flushed back out as a different color.

I watched a Toiret Status performance in Fukuoka Japan in a shrine on top of a sumo ring. The show promoters were serving Japanese BBQ (Yakiniku / Yakitori) with a distinct common Japanese BBQ sauce and Heinz yellow mustard, and it was possibly some of the best food I have ever had. While I was eating I watched Isamu aggressively move around the sumo rink using a nintendo controller as a midi device, triggering intense bursts of sound. The first two steps in his goal - consumption and digestion - were happening to me when I first met him. The dedication Japanese people often display in art was also apparent while watching his performance; it felt like a congealing of "Japanese-ness" with the sumo rink, shrine, food, joyful and absurd music all meshing together in a quick burst.


Isamu’s new Toiret Status record Otohime is named after a fairy tale queen (with magical powers?) who lives undersea and entertains travelers by giving out gifts like jewelry. In Japanese this title could be an apt pun for - sound queen. However, Isamu stated that the title is a wishful statement about how his music would be utilized in the future. When people flush a toilet, he hopes his music might play and become a funny reminder of the Japanese emphasis on politeness and social tact. He likes the idea of turning something awkward into something fun. Toiret Status uses romaji (English letters written in Japanese phonetics to describe a foreign or new idea that is not in the Japanese tradition) for his album title, to hint at a pun and imply the desired function of the music while simultaneously alluding to Japanese folklore - a queen who makes music.

“Sub Rosa” is Dominio’s first compilation album since the beginning of its publishing activity as an independent label at the beginning of this year. It features contributions from a list of both old and new friends of the collective which have performed at some of the different concerts that they have organised over the last two years. “Sub Rosa” is a reflection of Dominio’s strong commitment with their local scene as much as their search for a wider projection through international connections. Ultimately, their goal is to stimulate a dialogue between their particular context and the rest of the world. The presence in this album of a high number of collaborative pieces is, too, a crystallisation of this dialogue. Most of these collaborations were created by correspondence during the 2020 March-August period, and shall provide a sample of the constant appearance, evolution and reshaping of projects around the collective.
The figures displayed in the album cover are the work of the Valencia-based sculptor Claudia Dyboski (IG: @dyboski).
