Maria aka @m_charlotte is our new hero. She strolled over to HRD one day, with a stroller full of records, after a full day at the J-O-B. Then she proceeded to casually lay down this enticing, impeccably conducted 3-hour journey through space, time & rhythm. 

Her life-long, genre-fluid love for music turned into record collecting some 10 years ago, which eventually led to the inevitable: deejaying. Depending on the occasion, sets travel from disco to multiple different directions – typically electro, new beat & breakbeat. Full tracklisting for this particular journey below.

More so than any other account, TINPE’s daily archival feed seems to have captivated lovers of underground dance music & club culture everywhere. Certainly, it has captivated me & keeps delivering the kind of musical joy that is hard to come by on these socials.

So I’m extra honored to post a guest mix by TINPE creator Ben Manzone. The mix came about through shared musical history: turns out we both used to be DEEP into obscure underground disco. 

15 years ago, Ben (as Benguin), Love On The Run and Fox 50 ran Foreal People, a deep cut disco party that took place in various New York locations. Those included Lucky Cat in BK (long gone) and Meatpacking District’s legendary APT (also long gone, and incidentally first venue I played at in NYC). 

Ben’s new guest mix revisits selections from Foreal People days. And trust me, old records are still fresh! Some of the jams have become better-known via streaming and reissues, while others still remain a little mysterious. No track-listing for now, but Shazam is your friend (except when it isn’t 😎)

Of all the Berlin DJs who make a living spinning strange, I'm-not-sharing-the-tracklist kind of records, Sugar Free, originally hailing from Madrid, might be the most fun. She plays bold, colourful tracks with an air of sci-fi and sleaze, somewhere between Italo, hi-NRG, electro and house. (Her Dimensions Mix last year was one of our favourites of 2023.) She's the kind of DJ who messes with your perception of genres and tempos by how she blends tracks together, and also a DJ with a rare grasp of mixing melodies and moods—just check out the first transition of this RA Podcast for a spine-tingling example.

Sugar Free doesn't speak much publicly, and you won't find a lot about her on the internet. She prefers to let her DJing speak for itself. And her RA Podcast says a lot: proggy basslines, heart-in-mouth descents into reverb-heavy breakdowns, eerie vocals and a general feel of psychedelia and '80s decadence. It's difficult to tell what era these records are from, which is part of the charm. For a bonus point, try and pick out two just-completed Sugar Free originals, some of her first productions ever after her debut track came out on Limousine Dream in 2022.

Lo behold, as I unveil this selection of music that must be some of the most unpopular and uncool stuff that one could imagine. You will basically love it or hate it. 

It sounds like that annoying neighbour who leaves a smooth jazz web playlist on too loud while doing tantra, a lounge of an empty downtown hotel lobby, or an eternal elevator ride to nirvana. It includes a barely mixed sequence of songs from smiling dudes in white ill-fitting suits, Balkan long-haired hippies, cheezy Kazakstanian saxamaphone wizards, and at least one guy who once filed a lawsuit against The Church of Scientology.

The concept's name is a stone-cold ripoff from a legendary mix series by Ocean People @hrd_underground_workshop

I played an in-store gig at Beams Fennica a couple of months ago – you can now relive it (or experience first time) on Soundcloud. When I think about Beams Fennica, I think about Terry Ellis, so this is almost exclusively UK Street Soul, with a bit of reggae, dub and jp ambient sprinkled in... One of the more premeditated sets I've played, as this was 100% vinyl and I didn't want to lug extra records to Japan... Played all but one I had with me. Hope u enjoy, peace 🌸

A fittingly lush mix filled with dusty, wobbly perfection from the lovely Helsinki based @suskidj this week.

I met Suski when she warmed up for me the first time I played at Post Bar in Helsinki a few years ago - a place i've returned to a few times and truely adore! Suski is a resident at the much-loved Helsinki club. I was initially drawn to her dj'ing as the set she played as a warm-up in Post Bar was a pitch-perfect and contextually divine fit for the space & time. 

This mix is a poignant follow up - diving through through the rich textures of immersive techno, and an entire journey through the world of electronica & idm with broken beats, ambience and charmingly off-kilter percussive rhythms.
