Ranj Kaler makes his exciting full release debut with ‘Our One Love’. 

Something of a household name now for his incredible work ethic, it might come as a surprise to know up until 2020, Ranj was just a working DJ in the heart of London content to play other people’s music. But then upheaval - the pandemic - a time that brought sea change to many of us in the music industry. 

For Ranj, a moment to reflect and to learn new skills - production - which quickly became signed releases for Saturo Sounds, 64K and Four Candles’ Keep Thinking. His fanbase grew. New fans included John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo and from his incredible production style, remixes for Hooj Choons, Liaka Sounds and ARRVL, and bigger and better labels were keen to sign him up. 

Successful collaborations with Norman H on Stripped Digital and Fauxplay on Music To Die For have led to his first solo release of the year, and we are over the moon he’s chosen ASTIR. ‘Our One Love’ is a love note to dance music; an obsession decades in the making distilled into audio. 

In original form, synths soar against a strong percussive bedrock and chunky bass. warm sweeps glisten as icy pads rise in the background revealing intricate sonic detail that glitters in the periphery. Heartfelt and deeply emotional, this is Ranj unencumbered and in full mastery of his skills. 

On remix duties, crowd favourite Silinder makes a welcomed return to the fold honing the emotive elements of the original into his remarkable, unmistakable style, while label head Real Gone Kid takes a break from, uhh, breaks to drop a deep house vibe thick with soul.

The four tracker features three Dragosh originals and a remix from Michael Lardy and Dudley Strangeways. The second release from the Romanian producer this year, it shows his flying form and commitment to continue doing what he loves.

The EP opens with ‘Josum’. With a stripped, crunching groove, a clipping synth bass soon joins in. Filled with small noises, ‘Josum’ invades your headspace and pushes your head down, your body up. A minimal, techy affair, it will not let you rest with its revolving bass and invasive, unsteady beat. The remix reels in the strangeness a bit while maintaining the minimal, never-standing-still feel to the original. Computer bleeps join the tunnelling groove, delivering a remix that it is more dance friendly but remains in the realm of heady weirdness.

Next up is ‘Perfect Timing’, the title track. Beginning with a cleaner cut beat than ‘Josum’, ‘Perfect Timing’ still maintains the feel of the EP with a rattling percussive beat before hitting you with a deep, thunderous bass. With haunting synths far in the background, the track keeps you guessing as to what is coming next. ‘Bad Idea’ closes out the EP in a decidedly more subdued fashion. Still in keeping with the deep, heady feel of the other track, it does so in a more low-key and laid back fashion. With a retro drum-machine led rhythm and a tractor beam for a bass, ‘Bad Idea’ is perfect for a darkened, end-of-the-night session.

Dragosh - Perfect Timing EP [LB015] (Vinyl Only)

Romanian producer @Mihai-Pol presents his “Edge of Echoes LP” for Lokomotiv’s third release, with LKMV003 featuring 5 tracks on a double-disc 180g vinyl record. 

“Emde” sets the scene with a low slung, fast-paced bassline, complemented by circulating, dreamy elements which imagine an unescapable dancefloor primed groove for the A side. 

On the B side, the title track “Edge of Echoes” introduces some of Mihai’s more nostalgic, signature space-age textures. Futuristic, otherworldly elements and glitchy qualities fill the canvas to create an adaptable staple track for any dancefloor. 

For the C side, Mihai revisits a creepy, enigmatic elegance, with Busy Guys’ fluctuating bassline and striking percussion cataloguing it as a must-have after hours track. 

Andana ensures that the D side isn’t forgotten, with a memorable melody sampling a pastiche of overpowering, eerie pads that sing out over the dancefloor. 

Lowish is the light at the end of the tunnel, rounding off the release with an injection of fun, fast-paced circular movements, creating a double-time groove that won’t be forgotten. 

The release has received early support from Raresh, Petre Inspirescu, Priku and many more, circulating prominent dancefloors and continuing the wave of hype in Romania and around the world.
