"Coexist" was written in the latter half of 2012, sometime after I started production of "Circles." 

In late 2011, all of my releases had been instrumental music. I had released an album and a EP (rookie mistake) and all the songs were instrumental songs. But I was getting nowhere. I attributed my lack of success to a lack of vocals (not the fact that I couldn't write a song or correctly compose it). So, at the end of the year I started buying vocal packs from all the sample websites. 

I stumbled upon the vocals for "Coexist" in one of these random packs I bought, and like "Circles" started building a track around it. 

Although I didn't use a reference track for this track, I was greatly inspired by the likes of Kaskade, Deadmau5, Nicky Romero, Avicii, and many other popular producers in 2012-2013 and their vocal tracks.

I knew I wanted an anthemic track, something with a lot of movement. The arpeggiated bass line at the beginning of the track served as the basis for the melody, chords, and main bass line rhythm of the song.

The song is composed in E just like the vocals. The pack provided a piano midi and a bass line midi but I ignored those in favors of my own chord progression and bass line patterns. 

Like "Circles" I used sounds from Nexus and other synths like Massive, Sylenth, 3xOSC, TAL series and others. The bass synths are all original 3xOSC patches I created in FL Studio. I based these on two patches from Nexus and tried recreating the sound as close as possible. The stabby chords are a Nexus preset, and the leads are designed in Sylenth mostly. 

Like I said, I influenced by the likes of Kaskade and Nicky Romero, so the song follows a verse-bridge-chorus structure like their songs, but without a real bridge as the vocal pack did not provide any vocals that could be used for a bridge in this song. But generally, it follows that structure.

At this point in my career I was moving away from dirty Dutch and Dutch house as my main reference genres. A lot of my music from 2012 onwards is very much in the progressive house camp as far as genre goes, and this song was another step in that direction. 

I had a lot of fun producing it. Working with vocals is always fun. Building new music from existing vocals proves to be challenging because the vocals are meant to work with the original song. But that's where we, as producers, can be creative and create something new from an existing base. 

I never released the song, except through Soundcloud a few times. It is as close to mastered as possible, but I never finished it. I just felt like by the time I was ready to release this song, the time for songs like it had passed, and it didn't feel relevant anymore. 

I still played it at my shows when I was DJing, and it usually went really well with the crowds. I had a long and a short version of it, and it was very easy to mix at any point during the show. 

I could've probably done better, but I was only 2 years into music production at this point, so I think what I produced isn't that bad. Over the years it has gotten better and sounds great, so maybe it deserves a release at some point.
