The Mistral, is a strong wind that commonly occurs in southern France, blowing down from the north along the lower Rhône River valley toward the Mediterranean Sea. As the wind reaches the Rhône delta, gusts can often hit speeds of 130 km (about 80 miles) per hour.

This recording was taken from the bedroom window of an old "Mas" (farmhouse) just outside Barbentane (Bouches-du-Rhône) with the mics pointing directly at a Plane tree (platane)at least 250 years old.

Sunrise cormorant calls from a tall pine rookery overlooking HQ pond in the ST. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Along with the cormorants the twenty plus minute audio features red winged blackbirds, gallinules, herons and other wildlife including the nasal grunt of pig frogs, Rana grylio (Lithobates grylio). One hour, 1am-2am Chill marsh frog & cricket calls recorded from the edge of Lighthouse Levee Trail.  By 1am mating calls have slowed  & frogs have chilled for the evening.  Instead of the frenzied calls of just after sunset, the Pig Frog and Green Tree Frogs are much more interestingly nuanced with Southern Field Cricket stridulation in the background. Post midnight nature audio is some of the most relaxing & peaceful of wildlife nighttime choruses. I play this track while working, relaxing and even while going to sleep ay night.  #Sony PCM recorders.

Past Midnight Marsh Frog Chill

Superb Lyrebird calling in the early morning, not long after dawn, in the Jamison Valley. This particular area of the Jamison Valley is on the slopes of the Narrow Neck Plateau and is covered in lush, wet sclerophyll forest, which borders a small pocket of rainforest.
Some of the birds the lyrebird mimics in this performance are: Laughing Kookaburra, Satin Bowerbird, Eastern Whipbird, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, Lewin's Honeyeater, Pied Currawong, Crimson Rosella, Pilotbird, Australian King Parrot. Many of the odd sounds it makes are pure Lyrebird calls as they do have their own unique repertoire. 
In the background you can hear many Bell Miners twinkling.

Superb Lyrebird In The Jamison Valley, Blue Mountains

This is a short clip that was taken from one of many recordings that I captured at the Hoh Rainforest (part of the Olympic National Park) in WA. This was recorded at around 8:47AM, shortly after I recorded the Dawn Chorus at the Hoh Rainforest earlier that same morning. 

I recorded this with a pair of Sennheiser MKH 20s in a modified SASS housing that was going into a Sound Devices 722.

Unheimlich –
When mismatching modes of intelligence, cognition and communication confront one another.

As Mark Fisher writes in The Weird and The Eerie, it’s not a simple case of 'enjoy[ing] what scares us'. Rather, ‘it has … to do with a fascination for the outside, for that which lies beyond standard perception, cognition and experience', an affect that involves terror and distress, but isn’t wholly described by them. 

Freud's believed that what we find the most eerie or scary originates not from the exotic or foreign, but from what was originally familiar then repressed and subsequently remanifested in an uncanny/ unheimlich guise.

It is not often that we come by experiences that threaten to disturb these patterns. Given the choice, most of us would deliberately avoid them. ‘It makes sense’, writes Freud, that ‘repetition, the re-encountering of identity [or sameness], is itself a source of pleasure’ — for pleasure, as Fisher helpfully glosses, ‘alway[s] refer[s] to previous forms of satisfaction’ — it is defined by familiarity. But what if this situation were inverted — the heterogeneity and diversity that can be sustained by rhythm preceding the necessary homogeneity of the tempo? What if objects didn’t work how you expected them to? What if the framing logic of time and space was different? What if the beat was … eerie?
