(FR) - OnYi est d'abord né de la collaboration entre l'artiste NxQuantize et le label marseillais Omakase Recordings. Cet album, d’une richesse narrative et sonore éblouissante, se distingue par une fusion de genres, combinant sonorités urbaines et cinématographiques, néo-jazz rythmé et électronique enveloppante, enrichi par l'utilisation d'instruments organiques, de boites à rythme et de synthétiseurs. Il comporte une pléthore d'invités de qualité issus d'univers différents, dont le rappeur new-yorkais Dark Skinned Assassin, la chanteuse franco-britannique Appolonie et le rappeur GREMS. Les sources d'inspiration d'Onyi oscillent entre différents artistes tels que Bonobo, Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, Djrum, Bonobo ou encore Daniel San. 

Le terme "OnYi", néologisme de l'artiste, signifie "être dans le vide", en écho à l'exploration des mystères de l'univers et des limites de notre existence. 

L'album est une contemplation de la nature et de l'espace, où la musique crée un silence qui donne vie à tout ce qui nous entoure. 


(EN) - OnYi is the result of a collaboration between the artist NxQuantize and the Marseilles-based label Omakase Recordings. This album, with its captivating wealth of narrative and sound, is characterized by a fusion of genres, combining urban and cinematic sounds, rhythmic neo-jazz, and enveloping electronica, enriched by the use of organic instruments, drum machines, and synthesizers. It features a plethora of high-quality guests from different worlds, including the New York rapper Dark Skinned Assassin, the Franco-British singer Appolonie, and the rapper GREMS. OnYi takes inspiration from artists such as Bonobo, Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, Djrum, Bonobo, and Daniel San. 

The term 'OnYi', a neologism coined by the artist, means 'to be in the void', reflecting his exploration of the mysteries of the universe and the limits of our existence. 

The album is a contemplation of nature and space, with the music creating a silence that gives life to everything around us.

Hell Yeah heads to Brazil and the cultured sounds of @pedro-b-2  for a hot new 12" that features Mariana Gehring and remixes from Romain FX and My Friend Dario. The digital version includes two bonus cuts while the vinyl is the first to have all-new artwork by FJD. 

Now based in France, inclusive party promoter Pedro Bertho’s music is a melting pot of sound that draws on his own personal heritage and a life spent digging for records. That means that Afro rhythms, Italo melodies, rolling reggae, deep house and plenty more all get mixed up into something new. They have come on the likes of Cracki Records and always search out innovative ways to bring euphoria to the dance floor. 

For the first tune, he works with Mariana Gehring, a São Paulo-based singer and composer influenced by new MPB and other signature Brazilian sounds like forro, maracatu and samba. Their excellent 'Tornei' is a mix of full-fat bass and sensuous vocals. Fizzing synths, percussion and FX bring the energy while Gehring arrives in the breakdowns to bring the spine-tingling soul. Romain FX is a scene mainstay, label head at Fauve, Boiler Room veteran and has released on the likes of Kalahari Oyster Cult and many more. His version is a retro workout with lush cosmic melodies and slinky grown-up grooves sure to get the floor full. 

Next is 'Éléphants au 5eme', a busy mix of analogue drums and hits, wild Elephant trumpets and fleshy synths that bring unusual tropical heat to any party. The same track is remixed by label regular and new school Balearic boss My Friend Dario. He plays with the vocals, layers in shimmering chords and keeps things dubby to make for another of his signature grooves. 

The digital bonuses are a fat-bottomed dub version of 'Tornei' and pumping new-age house cut 'Chez Botallico' with its woodwind leads and steamy synth sounds. 

Pedro Bertho and co. really bring a different kind of party with these humid jungle grooves.

Pedro Bertho - Éléphants Au 5eme (Original Mix)

A month after the release of his debut album as Tambores En Benirras, 2021’s fabulous Orbe Dotodo, Graham Newby’s life changed forever. After years living with a visual impairment, his sight had deteriorated so much that he was declared “registered blind”. For a man who had spent decades dividing his time between travelling, DJing, running clubs and lengthy sessions in his own studio, it was a genuinely life-changing moment.

It was against this backdrop, and the need to alter his working methods, that Ondas Horizontales, the second Tambores En Benirras album took shape. Inspired by a mixture of daydreaming, visualisation, immersion in other people’s music (escapism that provided mood enhancement, rather than a specific set of ideas) and long periods spent soaking up the sun in Ibiza, the album is the most vividly detailed, sonically colourful, and sun-soaked collection that Newby has released to date.

Newby’s declining sight forced him to stop spending long spells staring at a screen and undoubtedly slowed down the production process. Yet it also allowed him to reconnect with his emotions, appreciate the storytelling and mood-shifting potential of music, and mine mind’s eye memories of places and spaces that have meant much to him over the years.

The results are undeniably stunning. Designed with horizontal listening in mind, the set distils a range of musical and real-life inspirations –or, as he puts it, “ambient soundtracks, cosmic journeys, Balearic rhythms and poolside sessions” – into ten mesmerising and magical tracks; an undulating, slow-motion journey that’s as breath-taking as it is beguiling.

Newby sets the tone with ‘Mi Sueno Vibe En Reverb’, a swelling, slow-burn ambient masterpiece that tiptoes between hope and melancholia, before flitting between imaginary sunset soundtracks (‘Estrellas En Mastella’, where lilting pedal steel sounds, bubbling electronics and shuffling breakbeats catch the ear), kaleidoscopic sun-up beats (the gorgeous warmth of ‘Generadora De Reyos’), enveloping beatless soundscapes (‘Templos Del Sol’, a drowsy drift in becalmed waters under the heat of the mid-afternoon sun), and dubby, loved-up lusciousness (‘Mokono’).

As the album progresses, bobbing and weaving on an ocean of vibrant chords, pulsing melodies and heart-stopping melodies, there’s no sign of Newby’s inspiration waving. ‘Alma Hablando’ channels the spirit of mid-80s ‘worldbeat’ and douses it in layers of Balearic bliss, while ‘Extrensor Entragado’ recalls the head-nodding haziness of his best Gripper productions of old while combining them with the musical equivalent of a humid summer breeze. Then there’s the mood-enhancing joy of the album’s superb title track –a mission statement of sorts – and the life-affirming post trip-hop/Balearic fusion of ‘Un Placer Celestial (Reprise)’, where the influence of his old friend Aim is clearly evident.

A serious sonic step-up from its predecessor and a future Balearic classic in its’ own right, Ondas Horizontales marks the start of a new musical and personal journey for its creator. It is, in his words, not the end of an era, but the start of a new one.

Second single, Cyclops, floats into sight through the thick, hazy gas cloud of the cosmos. Its uplifting, distant, bowed strings and high, staccato percussive tones reveal themselves, but just as quickly disappear as you reach out to touch them through the spacesuit. Almost cinematic in its scope, just like the mythical Cyclops, this piece has one singular vision and it will leave you breathless.

Acid Youth is a project started in 2016 by Davide Nicosia, an electronic music producer based in Bologna.
Under the influence of Chicago House, Krautrock and EBM, https://soundcloud.com/acid-youth is a blend of troubled basslines, guitars, modular freakness, frozen pads, analogic distortions and overdriven drum machines.
After the previous releases on MFZ Records and Land of Dance Records, Acid Youth comes to Elephant Gait with "My Acid", a 4 tracks EP that is a psychedelic clash between acid and space rock. Saturated drum machine, 303, organ and guitar are the main elements of these tracks.
"Polyptych" pays tribute to motorik drum rhythms; "My Acid" and its tense west-coast synth line drive you in a dark territory; "Regrets" is a flux of sounds with a 303 bassline as a mantra; "Despite" and its major scale close the EP and resolve the tension.
