Three Nocturnes: II. Subversion

Zachary M. Watkins has a Master of Music degree from California State University, Sacramento where he studied with Dr. Stephen Blumberg and Leo Eylar, and a Bachelor of Arts in music composition from California State University, Hayward—now California State University, East Bay—where he studied with Dr. Frank La Rocca.

A Sacramento native, his works have been performed extensively by students and staff from The California State Universities in East Bay and Sacramento, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and the San Francisco Cabaret Opera company, Goat Hall Productions. His orchestral work “Zodiac,” which pioneered the composer’s Kaleidoscopic Development technique, was premiered by the CSUS Symphony Orchestra in May of 2016. He also maintains a music engraving business that provides digital engraving services to academics, composers, and music students.

Outside the classical music realm, Watkins has worked with Sacramento-area artists from a wide variety of genres, including local hip-hop legends Mr. P Chill and Mr. Hooper (also known as Crazy Ballhead). He is a member of BMI, and an active member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda honor societies. The composer currently resides in Sacramento with his partner, Erin.
