Composer and saxophonist&nbsp;Steve Coleman, known for his innovative compositional style, brings his improvisational jazz workshop to Symphony Space, demonstrating and sharing his unique technique. Jazz aficionados are invited to bring their instruments, ready to learn the finer points of jazz improvisation from this pioneering jazz artist.
Coleman's Jazz Gallery improvisation workshops, inspired by the spontaneous composition traditions of jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, and John Coltrane, focus on developing creativity and melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic voice-leading skills. Encompassing pedagogical techniques such as individual work, demonstrations by Coleman, theoretical discussions of the skills necessary to develop, listening exercises, and discussing the functions and characters of the different instruments, Coleman at all times stresses creativity and communication above all. Much more than just a music clinic or jam session, these workshops focus on the skills necessary to initiate the creative process, with an emphasis on uniting both intuitive and logical modes of thinking. Beginners and spectators are welcome, but the brisk pace and level of musicianship will make this a stimulating experience for more advanced musicians.
