Jay Glass Dubs sublimates Athenian distress and ennui into plasmic dub ether on ‘Plegnic’, his lushly evolved 1st collection of new material for Ecstatic, following from their acclaimed, 2LP ‘Dubs’ [2017] set of his earliest, hard-to-find tape releases. 

Deconstructing and rebuilding Jamaican dub with musique concrete production methods and a lingering air of inspiration from new age and Laïko, or Greek popular music, on ‘Plegnic’ Jay Glass Dubs fascinatingly evolves his sound with richer melodic and harmonic arrangements in a concerted effort to bridge and expand the nostalgic, esoteric and dancefloor dimensions of his unique sound world.

The key to the record lies in its title, ‘Plegnic’; an extinct word meaning “to strike like a hammer”, as well as its palpable sense of nostalgia. In this archaic context, JGD uses vintage machines and obsolete samples into junction with vocals from Yorgia Karidi - sound artist and coincidentally former beau of his childhood neighbour, and Andreas Kassapis one of his oldest friends, who provides the cover art - to conjure a strikingly new, mutated take on classic and well-trodden styles; metaphorically and anachronistically renewing their purpose while connoting his newfound dancefloor drive in the process.

Recording took place at his mother’s house in the Athens suburbs, with Fugazi’s ‘Steady Diet of Nothing’ on repeat. It was here that he dug out an old Juno, a Yamaha RX5 drum computer, and some “…crappier equipment” that provides the structural scaffold to his array of nostalgic, melancholic Laïka samples, which could be considered the ghost in the shell or the diffused soul of this superb five part crop.

On the A-side he sets out to spook with the desiccated, teetering steppers motion of ‘Temple Dub’ featuring heavily processed vox by Yorgia Karidi, but the heady nostalgia takes over with a sublime tactility in the vaulted chorales and endless reverb tails of ‘Umbro Dub’, and again in the aching sehnsucht of ‘Mouthless Dub’, where traces of Laïka’s bouzouki melodies most beautifully glimmer thru. 

However, the B-side is far more upfront and up-for-it, firstly putting his weight behind the cranky skank of ‘Dry Dub’ with its hexagonal drums and acidic bass squirm, then in the super squashed swagger of ‘Fearless Dub’, a near 10 minutes long pinnacle of his dancefloor output to date.

Ultimately Jay Glass Dubs’ music is riddled with the kind of nostalgia that can make an unfamiliar piece of music feel like an intense déjà entendu, like you’ve heard it before in a dream or some altered state. That’s a rare and precious thing.

XKatedral presents the first full-length release of the work of Swedish composer David Granström. In four interrelated pieces, Granström’s new collection of sound work – A distant color, secluded – invites us to take part in the creation and destruction of perceptual worlds; worlds whose interiors are at once manifestations of vast topological complexity, and of minimalist, pure non-dimensionality.

David Granström (b. 1987) is a composer and sound artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. His sound work is characterized by harmonic simplicity and spatio-textural complexity, employing sounds of both synthetic and acoustic origin. Part of Granström’s practice consists in researching new methods for working algorithmically with real-time sound synthesis and precision-tuned harmony, a work which is technically realized by employing tools that he himself develops. Earlier releases of Granström’s sound work includes the limited-edition cassette Ephemeris, also on XKatedral.

Όμμα 

Σχηματίστηκαν το 1999 στα Γιάννενα από τους Περικλή και Βαγγέλη Μπουλουχτσή, γνωστούς στην Ελληνική εναλλακτική σκηνή ως ιδρυτικά μέλη του πάντα ενεργού Κεφάλαιο 24 (a.k.a. Chapter 24) με σημαντική δισκογραφική και συναυλιακή δραστηριότητα.

Οι Όμμα έχουν εκδόσει δύο δίσκους, οι οποίοι περιέχουν οργανική μουσική, τραγούδια όπως και spoken word κομμάτια, πάντα με έντονο ατμοσφαιρικό χαρακτήρα, που εκτείνονται στυλιστικά από την electronica στο trip hop, την ambient και τη film music.

Η πρώτη δισκογραφική παρουσία των Όμμα υπήρξε το cd “Ιχνογραφία”, το οποίο εκδόθηκε από την Ankh Productions το 2001(ΗΧΕΙ CD 003) και ήταν εξ ολοκλήρου οργανικό.
Το 2007 εκδόθηκε και πάλι από την Ankh Productions, το δεύτερο cd τους με τίτλο “Ιδίοις όμμασι” (HXEI CD 006), το οποίο εκτός από οργανική μουσική, περιείχε τραγούδια και spoken words dark electronica τοπία, με έντονα πειραματικό χαρακτήρα και απολύτως προσωπικό ήχο.
Καί τα δύο άλμπουμ, απέσπασαν πολύ καλές κριτικές. 
Έχουν επιπλέον συμμετάσχει με το κομμάτι “Ψηλά στην ατμόσφαιρα” στο collector's item premium CD-συλλογή του περιοδικού Ποπ & Ροκ για το τεύχος του Σεπτέμβρη του 2004. 

Έχουν γράψει μουσική για πολλές θεατρικές παραστάσεις, ενώ μουσική τους έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί σε διάφορα ντοκιμαντέρ που έχουν προβληθεί στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό.

Έχοντας ως κύριο όχημα τον αυτοσχεδιασμό, η δραστηριότητα των Όμμα, περιλαμβάνει, εκτός των άλλων, την επιτόπια σύνθεση μουσικής κατά την ταυτόχρονη προβολή αξιόλογων και ιστορικών ταινιών του βωβού κινηματογράφου, όπως της ταινίας “Άμαξα φάντασμα” του Σουηδού σκηνοθέτη Victor Soestrem, της ταινίας “Inferno” των Ιταλών Bertolini και Liguoro, αλλά και της ταινίας ορόσημο του κινηματογραφικού εξπρεσιονισμού “Το εργαστήριο του Dr. Καλιγκάρι”. Οι συγκεκριμένες παραστάσεις πραγματοποιούνται με ευρεία χρήση ηλεκτρο-ακουστικών και ηλεκτρονικών οργάνων, αλλά και found objects. 

Η τρέχουσα δραστηριότητά τους περιλαμβάνει, εκτός της αδιάλειπτης  δημιουργικής τους συμμετοχής στο Κεφάλαιο 24,  ηχογραφήσεις νέου υλικού καθώς και πολλές, αλλά πάντα επιλεκτικές ζωντανές εμφανίσεις, όπως στο Καφωδείο/Καφεθέατρο στη Θεσσαλονίκη, στο Θυμωμένο Πορτραίτο και το Μουσείο Αργυροτεχνίας στα Γιάννενα, στο Underflow στην Αθήνα, αλλά και την πρόσφατη συμμετοχή τους στα πλαίσια των Soundtrope Festival Sessions, όπου μοιράστηκαν τη σκηνή με τον Theodore και τον γνωστό τραγουδοποιό από το Bristol, Matt Elliott. 

Στις εμφανίσεις τους οι Όμμα παρουσιάζουν κομμάτια από τους δίσκους τους, όπως επίσης και ανέκδοτο υλικό, συνεπικουρούμενοι επι σκηνής από τον Αντώνη Παπαδόπουλο (κιθάρες, ambiences, fx), τον Ευθύμη Σφαιρόπουλο (κοντραμπάσο) και τις Στέλλα Τζοβάρα και Κωνσταντίνα Γοργόλη (τραγούδι-φωνητικά), συνδυάζοντας πάντα το ηλεκτροακουστικό και ηλεκτρονικό στοιχείο με την ψυχεδελική dark-folk τραγουδοποιία, σε μία έντονα ατμοσφαιρική performance.
