Bossa Nova 2001 is one of the defining albums of the Shibuya-Kei scene of the 1990's. P5's prior albums had something of a ticky-tacky quality, but Bossa Nova 2001 burst forth as a fully realized masterpiece. (An aside: The album was released in 1993, and the "2001" in the title was a reference to the retro-futurism of the 1960's.) Pastiche blends seamlessly with an astute pop sensibility to create the "new stereophonic sound spectacular" that became the core of P5's sound. While certain later albums were spectacularly experimental at the time, Bossa Nova 2001 remains the P5 album with the most genuinely timeless sound. "Sweet Soul Revue", one of the band's biggest hits in Japan, blends girl-group nostalgia with funk and soul, a synthesis that presaged the wonderful potential of the Shibuya-Kei scene. The album's best song, the dreamy fantasia "Magic Carpet Ride," would become the final song ever performed live by Pizzicato Five, and no fan could have asked for a better selection.
