We are writing the year 3021. The very first gene-manipulated virus-free post-covidians made it to carry their infra speakers back onto earths surface to play sublows for the concrete jungles, or whats left of them at least. They brought their ancient rituals and lullabies from their dungeons: sounding like a dark future of Dub without nice and happy skanking where only ruff and rugged dirty bone structures have remained the centuries below the planet's crust.
The tribe's chief a.k.a. The Duke Of Dub hands down two bare riddims with a jukey groove, highly detailed breakbeat layers and anything closely dubby only greeting from a very far mountain of suffaration:
Everyting Gwan In opens like an easy halftime beat, but sucks the listeners into its roughness quite fast, allowing no breath or sun inside between all them sinister soundscapes and speech scraps.
Fight Dub appears to be fried in the same pan at first, but got a slightly more stepping bass, lifting the classic breaks and vocal bits up into a merciless footwerk climax towards the end. Jah man!

Here at 45Seven Unlimited we enjoy our sweet and salty popcorn and we are always looking for exciting new blends that inject modern beats and basses into a half century of Dub history. This next incarnation of our bubbling melting dub tank hits right in this very honey pot with this double A side by Rainforest.

Bullet Riddim sets the pace for this plate with a nicely syncopated yet rolling groove with deep skanks, playful bass and some delicious drum switching. "My selectah is here to suit your heart desire ... and set your soul on fire" proclaims the vocal chop throughout the intro. And he is not wrong: Bullet is a rollercoaster of Jungle breaks, dubbed out Reggae horns, skanks and FX. Truly a "riddim so nice you gotta play it twice". [...]

Rainforest is transmitting from Mexico, has got a strong graffiti background and releases Drum & Bass music on labels like Shoot, Omni, Absys, Syhda, Monochrome and his own Breakbeat Rebelz. Known for the brilliant Jungle Is Our Dub 7" on 45Seven in 2016 which was almost label defining already, this new plate is even about to run them all out again. "Pull it up"!

Few names shine as brightly in the cosmology of dubwise bass music as that of V.I.V.E.K. From releasing absolutely groundbreaking tracks for the better part of 20 years primarily on his own System and VIVEK imprints, to curating and hosting his legendary System nights, to bringing so much rising talent to light, it’s honestly difficult to imagine the last two decades of UK and global sound system music without him. 

For ZamZam 96 V.I.V.E.K went straight to the bedrock of sound system music and delivered a power-stepper of galactic proportions. 

“Illusions Dub” opens with starkly heavy valve bass and a punishing kick, leaving little doubt where this journey is headed . Richly adorned with neck-snapping percussion, industrial snares, post-punk atmospherics and a gorgeous melodic figure, the tune employs classic 90s digi-dub principles while feeling like a message from a gloriously human -or post-human- future. 

“Illusions (Raw Dub)” runs rugged through the desk in fine style, with barely restrained feedback, phasers, and deep space echo and reverb ripping open shimmering holes in space-time for a truly cosmic Part 2.

Jim Coles’s fifth instalment of his best-selling ‘Acid Dub Studies’ series arrives in the form of the third set of original works exploring the infectious sound of the 303 bass-line in a dubwise setting. The album takes in traditional dub mixing approaches in a digital and roots/digi-dub style whilst also making space for more electronic and ambient processes to close the project.

It says a lot about the interconnectedness of the global dubwise underground that it took downtime with Bristolian Neek in Portland to spur the link between ZamZam and Feel Free Hi Fi out of the Minneapolis Twin Cities. Once he put us on to them we were hooked- not only by their brilliant music but by their rigorously DIY approach and aesthetic. Heavily inspired by the more esoteric angles of early digi-era JA dancehall and UK dub (Shaka, Disciples, Mixman and Gussie P being some touchstones) the duo create a sound both reverential and unique, steeped in the traditions but striking out hard left into idiosyncratic territory all their own. Releasing all of their works up to this point on their own fantastic Digital Sting label, we’re excited to showcase them on ZamZam.

In “Voyageur” an ominous mid-range figure, heaving synth bass and complex intertwining melodies drive the tune into heavily cinematic territory, thick atmospherics and strange synthetic animal calls like a lost John Carpenter soundtrack-in-dub. The duo says, “Voyageur in its title speaks a bit to the mythic, mysterious, but also very real wild places of the North Country where we live... and how it all rubs up against the contemporary urban environment.”

“Underground”s opening stabs, bassline and drums could have time-travelled from Unity Sounds or Jammys, but bring an eerie darkness in their deployment that is unmistakably now.  Feel Free Hi Fi explain, “Underground in its title is a tribute to the spirit of underground music, of the DIY non commercial ethos... So the tunes together kind of speak to time and change, and the struggle of what's going on now. Trying to preserve the environment and and also the wild places of basement and warehouse gigs, and the outsider mentality of underground music that also seems like it's fading away but hopefully isn't lost.”

On the cliffs of Uluwatu, when the ocean devours the sun, the seven masks awaken.
Eyes swell red, jaws stretch wide, and teeth gleam like knives.
The stone trembles under their laughter,
and the night opens with a mouth full of drums.

Before gods, before men,
storms carved the first dance:
thunder cracking skulls of clouds,
waves tearing cliffs like flesh from bone,
winds shrieking as if torn from hollow throats.
The masks are fragments of this first hunger,
faces of a rhythm that devours silence.

When dancers put them on, the masks feed.
Flesh becomes rhythm,
breath becomes fire,
and the world shakes with a frenzy of jaws.

The Ritual of Polyrhythm is not a song — it is a feast.
Teeth bite into stone, flames lick the wind,
and every step drives deeper into the marrow of the night.
The cliffs themselves bleed sound until the horizon splits open.


The Seven Masks and Their Dances

1. Mask of Stone Breath

The earth exhales through basalt teeth.
Its rhythm grinds slow and merciless, a jaw of rock crushing time.

2. Mask of Ember Laughter

Flames split into a grin of sparks.
Its rhythm leaps jagged and sharp, fire biting the night in radiant joy.

3. Mask of Ocean Eyes

The tide opens as a mouth that swallows endlessly.
Its rhythm drags all steps into the black water, drowning them in memory.

4. Mask of Hollow Flame

Ash swirls in its throat, a furnace without warmth.
Its rhythm is a hollow blaze, breath echoing in chambers of fire
where sound stretches like teeth across the void.

5. Mask of Thunder Echo

The skull of the sky splits wide.
Its rhythm is a roar of jaws above the earth,
a storm chewing silence into splinters.

6. Mask of Shifting Steps

The ground cracks beneath its feet.
Its rhythm twists and breaks, pulling dancers into chasms that never end.

7. Mask of Air and Dream

The final mouth opens into dawn.
Its rhythm devours form into shadow, shadow into smoke,
until only breath drifts across the horizon, carrying the hunger of night into day.


Closing

At sunrise the masks return to stone,
but their teeth remain restless.
They gnash in thunder, grind in the tide,
and bite within the dreams of all who have seen them.
